If you’ve been following our journey, you will know that we have been obsessed with breakfast in Penang. There are just so many places to catch a bite in the morning that it is overwhelming. One of the places that stood out was Roti Bakar Hutton Lane.
One would think that after eating at so many different places we would have had our fill of roti bakar right? Not true. Trust me, there is nothing quite as good as the toasted bread and soft boiled egg in the morning. Plus the kids absolutely adored it!
Anyway, back to the iconic Roti Bakar Hutton Lane. This particular hawker food stall really tantalized our tastebuds. It was the only spot that we visited twice.
In fact, breakfast here was so good that we checked out an hour early (at 5 am!) from our accommodation in Batu Ferringhi, dragged our two sleepy toddlers for one last breakfast here before we caught our flight. Yes it was that good!

Roti Bakar Hutton Lane Location And Timings
Address: 300, Jalan Phee Choon, 10050 George Town, Pulau Pinang
Timings: 5:00am-1:00pm
The location is quite literally in the name. Roti Bakar Hutton lane is on Hutton lane in George town. It is insanely popular and even if you head here at 6 am in the morning, you are bound to see people sitting around with a steaming hot plate of breakfast.
The man who is the face of the business (his face is really the logo!) is really sweet! My Malay is restricted to a few basic words but he helped me negotiate the order with ease. Plus since we were there really early in the morning, he stopped to talk to the children and offered them a sweet after asking us permission first.
Roti Bakar Hutton Lane Parking
So here’s the truth. If you head here early in the morning then there is definitely not going to be any issues with parking. We did this the second time round and kept our cab waiting. He was parked just 100 meters away from us.
If you do decide to come here after 8 o’clock then parking is an issue. The best thing to do is to walk here if you stay close by. Or get a cab to drop you off. Cabs are easy enough to get in the area so you won’t have any issue getting back.
Roti Bakar Hutton Lane Menu
A glimpse of the menu at Roti Bakar Hutton Lane menu.
If you are headed to Roti Bakar Hutton lane know that this place is famous for both roti bakar and roti canai. The roti bakar however is different from the other breakfast spots. The bread is toasted on a charcoal fire. This gives the bread a really nice flavor.
I remember having this in Universal cafe in Brunei. Back then, I was told that the bread was always toasted on charcoal fire. With the advent of gas stoves, this technique died out.
There are only a few places in Malaysia and the rest of southeast Asia that serve roti bakar where the roti or bread is toasted on charcoal nowadays. This is why I highly recommend trying it here.

The roti canai here is also very very interesting. The ones that we had on the first day involved the roti or the parata being shaped in a way that there was a hole in the center. After being fried well on both sides, an egg was then cracked in the center. The egg was cooked with a blow torch. Cheese was topped over it and melted before it was served.
Note that there are really loads of variants in this and I had a hard time deciphering them all. Some came just with egg. Others included cheese. You could also opt for a curry to go with it. The curry could be plain or with meat like chicken or beef.
Another option on the menu is roti telur. This is bread which is rolled in egg. It is equally delicious and you can opt for a curry to go along with it.
All this needs to be washed down with some fluids.
The options on the menu include teh or tea, koppi or coffee and milo. You can also get iced versions of all these which is great on days where the sweltering heat gets to you.
Seating In Roti Bakar Hutton Lane
The seating area in Roti Bakar Hutton lane is pretty basic and is very similar to many of the other popular hawker stalls. You will find lots of plastic tables and stools in an open area. People bustle too and fro. The service is fast and the area is relatively clean.
During peak hours you will have to wait for a seat and the line to get your order will be long. The first time around, it took half an hour for us to get our order. Then again we reached there at 9 am so it was right in peak hours.
Overall Impression Of Roti Bakar Hutton Lane
Despite all the hue and cry about Roti Canai Transfer road and many other places, I think that the spot that captured my heart was Roti Bakar Hutton Lane. The food was awesome. The service was great and despite the crowds there was always a smile. The fact that we went back itself speaks volumes.
