One of the most popular trips that people take from the capital city is the one between Delhi and Agra. This is because everyone wants to tick the Taj Mahal off their bucket list. I mean who can blame them? The Taj Mahal is one of the ancient wonders of the world!
Like the rest of the crowd, I wanted to see the Taj Mahal too but unfortunately I have never made the journey till recently. Since we had a visa run to Delhi, we decided to squeeze in a few extra days and take in the sights. This included a short detour from Delhi to Agra.
There are many ways in which you can make the journey from Delhi to Agra. It all depends on your budget, time and the amount of luxury you want along the way.
Initially, we wanted to take the train. Not just because it is the cheaper option but because it would give our toddlers an experience of traveling by Indian railways. If you have done this before, you will know exactly why I call it an experience!
But the fact that we had been on the road for many days and would be involved in the chaos of shifting across continents deterred us. Instead we chose to travel from Delhi to Agra by car. It had its pros and cons. I’ll tell you about them in a bit.
Note: You will find that everyone asks whether Delhi is safe or not. The answer is simple. You need to be street smart to survive in this city! Keep your eyes open and always be aware of where your belongings are.

Agra is located in a state called Uttar Pradesh, popularly called UP. The distance between Delhi and Agra is just around 250 km. Give or take a couple of kilometers depending on the part of the city that you leave from.
Getting out of the city is probably the most difficult part if you catch peak hour traffic. Once you hit the highway, it’s smooth sailing.
Delhi To Agra By Bus
If you are looking for a flexible mode of transportation from Delhi to Agra that does not break the bank, then take the bus. There are numerous buses that depart from various points across the city. Many of which can be booked spontaneously.
This gives you a couple of advantages. You don’t have to rush to the railway station early in the morning, which can be pretty inconvenient. Buses tend to be more punctual as far as departure times are concerned too!

So this is probably one of the most efficient (& costliest) ways to travel from Delhi to Agra. There are many platforms where you can rent a cab. Ola and Uber are the top contenders. I however would recommend staying away from Ola because their customer service is slow and pathetic if it works at all.
I only managed to get in touch with Ola support on twitter and by the time they reacted (48 hours later!!!) our valuables were long gone. Long story short, avoid Ola!
You will also be approached by random taxi drivers when you are in the city, iv you tell them that you are headed to Agra. This happens when you want to make the journey from Agra to Delhi too.
Be careful! Sometimes, they will harass you midway for more money. We found it easier to just book a service end to end.
The journey from Delhi to Agra by Cab can take anywhere between 3 ½ hours to 6 hours. Leaving early morning is the best way to beat traffic.
Delhi To Agra By Rental
Another great way to go from Delhi to Agra is by renting a car. There are many rental agencies in the city.
If you are renting a car make sure that you have a valid drivers license. If you are not an Indian make sure that your drivers license is valid in the country.
You should also be comfortable driving on Indian roads.
