Kutna Hora is one of the lesser explored places in Czechia that I fell in love with. Strange as it may seem, this gorgeous city was not part of my original trip. We were traveling between Prague and Bratislava when we thought a short break on the way would be ideal. Situated just slightly off the route, we found exploring the things to do in Kutna Hora was the ideal way to spend the better part of the day.
Kutna Hora is one of the magical places in Europe that you have to experience to understand just what I mean. The city is very walkable, it is easy to reach from Prague and the historic center is such a pleasure to walk around. We visited during Autumn so we were greeted with stunning yellow and orange foliage all over the city. It was beautiful.

Things To Do In Kutna Hora
One would think since it is a small city, there isn’t really much to do. We however found ourselves spending well over six hours here and wishing that we could stay longer. This is because Kutna Hora is beautiful. While there may not be loads to do, you tend to linger at all the different places.
Here are some of the things to do in Kutna Hora that we absolutely loved. Oh spoiler alert! A cup of the world’s best hot chocolate was one of them!
1. St. Barbara’s Cathedral
One of the most iconic things to do in Kutna Hora is to visit St. Barbara’s Cathedral. This gorgeous building can be seen as soon as you drive into the city. It pretty much towers over the surrounding buildings and once you reach here, you will be treated to some amazing views.
St. Barbara’s cathedral is a Roman Catholic church that was built in the Gothic style. It is in fact one of the most famous churches in Europe, so you know that it is one of the things to do in Kutna Hora that you really should not miss. It is also a UNESCO Heritage site.
If you’ve done your research, you will know that Kutna Hora is famous for its mines. St. Barbara is the patron saint of miners. Her cathedral is particularly symbolic to the people of the town. It is also close to the Czech Museum of Silver. I’ll talk about the museum in just a bit.
2. Corpus Christi Chapel
The inner empty rooms of the Corpus Christi Chapel with its high arches is one of the interesting things to do in Kutna Hora.
Right next to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral is a small chapel. You could be forgiven if you just walked by without noticing it. This chapel is none other than the Corpus Christi Chapel. The whole history of the chapel is not completely known but it is believed that this Gothic chapel was actually constructed before the cathedral at its side.
The Corpus Christi chapel has an interesting history. Initially it was used by the Jesuits as an oratory. When the order was abolished in 1773, the chapel was then handed from private owner to private owner. At one time it was even used to store flour.
Today, there isn’t much to see in the Corpus Christi chapel. The walls are bare and the room is empty. You can admire the arches that once must have been decorated. You can imagine what life must have been like a couple of centuries ago. It is a quick stop during your visit but is still one of the interesting things to do in Kutna Hora.
3. GASK – Central Bohemian Gallery
Right next to the Corpus Christi Chapel and the St Barbara Cathedral is GASK. This is the Central Bohemian Gallery which houses some art work inside. A cool fact about the GASK building is that it used to be an old Jesuit monastery. I assume it was back when both Corpus Christi Chapel and the Cathedral were run by the Jesuits.
We unfortunately did not have time to enter the gallery. Like I said before, we were trying to cover as many things to do in Kutna Hora as part of a stop on our way from Prague to Bratislava. This is why we were short on time and one of the reasons why I always recommend staying in the city for a wee bit longer. Preferably over a weekend.
4. Galerie Soch
GASK on one side and the beautiful Galerie Soch on the other side.
One of my favorite things to do in Kutna Hora was to take in the views of Galerie Soch. This gorgeous gorgeous wall has some really intricate sculptures mounted on it. It is also one of the most photographic locations in the city. With St. Barbara Cathedral in the background and the wall with the statues leading up to it, you will find that the sight is something that will stay with you for a very long time.
5. Vinice Vineyard
The Vinice vineyards that border Galerie Soch are very picturesque. They are one of the sights that you should not miss in Kutna Hora.
Just at the side of the entrance to the Corpus Christi chapel is a small entrance and a tiny shop. This is the entrance to the Vinice vineyards. Here you can buy a cup of wine made from the very grapes that you see in front of you. You can even sit at one of the tables and enjoy the view. It is a lovely place to chill though on colder days the winds can really chill you to the bone.
The only downside is that they do not accept credit cards, so you need to have the local currency at hand.
6. Indulge In Some Chocolate At Kavárna Na Kozím plácku
After wandering around you probably want to sit in a nice quiet spot for a meal or to enjoy a cuppa joe. My recommendation is Kavárna Na Kozím plácku. I honestly don’t know how to pronounce it but it is the quaintest cafe around and pretty close to St. Barbara Cathedral so you can easily walk to it.
The cafe has both an indoor and outdoor seating area. Since we visited on a cooler day, we chose to stay warm indoors. While you are here make sure to try out the croissant sandwiches. They literally melt in your mouth.
The hot chocolate on the other hand is super rich. We ordered two for four of us and honestly one would have done because we struggled to finish what we had.
7. Visit The Czech Silver Museum
One of the things to do in Kutna Hora is to visit the Czech Silver Museum. Unfortunately for us, the museum was closed on the day that we visited. This museum has various exhibits which explain about Kutna Hora’s role in the mining industry. The silver mines were a huge resource back in the day and played an important role in the history of the city.
8. Sedlec Ossuary
The outer façade of the Sedlec Ossuary which is one of the iconic things to do in Kutna Hora.
What really attracted us to Kutna Hora was the Sedlec Ossuary. We had never been to an ossuary before so this was a new experience for both us and the kids. The Sedlec Ossuary is situated a bit away from the city so you do need some form of transport. There’s plenty of parking in the area so that isn’t something that you need to worry about.
From the outside the Sedlec Ossuary is pretty unassuming. It is flanked by graves on all sides and the ossuary itself is in the center. You have to purchase an entrance ticket to the ossuary. We had bought a combined ticket to the Ossuary and the St. Barbara cathedral when we were visiting the cathedral itself. But you can just buy the entrance ticket from the Ossuary entrance.
Inside the ossuary you will find a lot of intricately arranged bones. Garlands of skulls and a bone chandelier are probably the highlight of the inside but if you pause a minute, you will also start to admire the way the other bones are arranged on the walls. You aren’t allowed to take photographs indoors though.
9. Visit The Lego Muzeum
Okay so it isn’t really a huge museum and it is privately owned but it still a great place to stop if you have a LEGO enthusiast with you. There is a Lego sop on one side where you can actually buy some LEGO sets. The café on the other side is themed which makes it a great place to stop for a bite and to keep the kids entertained.
The building also has great LEGO themed rooms that you can actually book and stay. The rooms are also pretty cheap and while it is on the outskirts of the city, you will still easily be able to check out all the things to do in Kutna Hora.
10. Walk Around The Main City
The city center is beautiful. Old buildings, beautiful trees, cobblestoned paths and more. Almost every street is picturesque. I would suggest wearing a nice pair of walking shoes though so that wandering around is more comfortable.
