One of the things that I have realized is that many people hesitate to take day trips from Amsterdam because they worry about how to get from point A to B. This is why I’ve started writing these transport related articles from the city. For example, getting from Amersfoort to Amsterdam or vice versa is such a simple process.
Luckily for you, I’m a Dutch resident and we’ve been traveling around the country as much as we can within the limited time we have outside work hours. Which is pretty much since the Dutch have such an amazing work life balance.

Amersfoort To Amsterdam Via Train
The easiest and honestly the best way to travel all around the Netherlands is to use the train network. It can get a bit costly though so be forewarned. Both Amsterdam and Amersfoort have a main train station which connects the cities via high speed trains. This means it is easy to catch an intercity and that there are loads of trains that run between the cities.
What Do You Need To Travel From Amersfoort To Amsterdam Via Train?
Most of the locals will never be seen without their NS International card or the OVchipcard. This is a personalized pass that lets everyone tap in and tap out of the stations. I really love it because it saves us the hassle of waiting in queues to get to the trains. Plus you can load your card up with special coupons that reduce your train fare during weekend travel and off hours travel.
Aren’t a local? No worries. You can always get a non personalized OVchipcard from one of the Centraal stations. This can be used during your stay in the Netherlands. You may not have the discounts that the locals get BUT you will find it very convenient.
Taking a one time journey? You can buy your ticket from the ticket counter at one of the Centraal stations or at Schiphol airport train station.
Where To Catch The Train From Amersfoort To Amsterdam
The trains leave from Amersfoort Centraal station. This is located slightly outside the main city center and should take you about a 10 minutes walk. It is very easy to navigate through and is super clean. Plus they had very nice restrooms there that are perfect if you have small children in tow or if you yourself need a bathroom break.
Where To Get Down At Amsterdam?
The trains from Amersfoort Centraal go straight to both Amsterdam Centraal Station and Amsterdam Schiphol Station. Not all of them are direct connections though, especially when it comes to Schiphol station.
You would need to plan your itinerary carefully if you want to go directly to the latter. The best part however is that you can easily get to the Amsterdam airport from Amersfoort.
Note that the Schiphol Station and the Amsterdam Centraal Station are not close to each other. Use the Schiphol airport if you want to catch a flight and the Centraal station if you want to head to the city center.
Getting From Amsterdam To Amersfoort By Train
Honestly this is rather self explanatory. The trains run both ways so you can catch a train from Amsterdam Schiphol station or Amsterdam Centraal Station to get to Amersfoort. Note that the Amsterdam Schiphol station is easily accessible from the airport so it makes the journey very convenient.
