I probably think about my vacations too far in advance but then, travel is what soothes my spirit. Every year, we find ourselves doing something different for Christmas. While I do love spending the season at home with the decorated tree and the smells of baked goodies, I love traveling during the Christmas season too.
This year I couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to spend Christmas on a beach. Yes! Why not? Head to a place that has the lapping of the water against the grains of sand and chill while soaking in the sun. Sounds delightful right?
If you are traveling with kids, make sure to pack your beach bag carefully. If I’ve learned over time is to expect the unexpected where they are concerned!
Still not sure where to head to? I totally get it!
That’s why I reached out to numerous travel bloggers and compiled this mega list of top places to spend Christmas on a beach. It spans so many continents that I am now finding it hard to narrow down the list to a single location.

Christmas On A Beach: Table Of Contents
The list of top places to spend Christmas on a beach really grew quickly. Everyone had suggestions and since they spanned across so many different continents, I thought it would be wise to segregate them as such.
I do know that some places have a few more entries than others but I will try and fill up the gaps as I get new entries. That being said, I know it can be a pain to keep scrolling through an exceedingly long list. Hence, I have used the links below to take you to the appropriate sections as needed. I hope the list provides you with the same amount of inspiration that it gives me.
AFRICA
While I have personally not spent Christmas on a beach in Africa, I was curious to see what other travel bloggers would suggest. With the huge number of countries in the continent, I hoped that we would get a couple of good suggestions. Unfortunately, just a few came in. We will however try and update this section when we can.
South Africa
Christmas on a beach in South Africa sounds pretty perfect doesn’t it? It is exotic, it is beautiful and there sure is a lot of stuff to do. I have to admit that I am seriously tempted by this option and may just have to think about convincing Shawn that it would be the perfect place to spend Christmas this year.
1. Cape Town
Christmas on a beach in Cape Town sounds pretty perfect.
LOCATION: Cape Town, South Africa
GETTING THERE: There are many international flights to Cape Town from all over the world. The best way to move around the city is to rent a car.
WHERE TO STAY: For those who want to stay close to the City Center (City Bowl), Sea Point is a very good option. It’s at the harbour, there are many restaurants, bars and shops. It’s easy to move around and is safe.
The beach on Mouille Point and President Hotel are some other options for accommodation. If you want to practice water activities like surfing and kitesurfing, Blouberg is a perfect area.
It’s a bit away from the city centre but right at the beach with many board rental places, schools, restaurants and coffee shops. It has more of a beach holiday vibe. Small Bay Guest House and Aquarius Luxury Suites has beautiful accommodation.
Christmas in South Africa is in the middle of the summer which guarantees great weather. It is both hot and sunny with the festive vibe is all around. Christmas Trees, street markets and music are all over the city. Cape Town is a great place to spend the Christmas holiday for any traveller: a family with children, an adrenaline junky, a romantic couple or a group of friends.
In Cape Town it’s possible to combine a beach holiday and city sightseeing, visiting safari parks and tasting great wines, an adventure holiday and a romantic getaway.
There are many great beaches in and around Cape Town one can spend days visiting just some of them. Beaches that you should not miss are Boulders Beach which has white sand and African penguins walking around, long and windy Blouberg Beach, fancy Clifton Beach, hidden Diaz Beach and many more.
Another thing you should not miss in Cape Town is the sunset. There are several great points to watch it from, but the best ones are the top of the Lion’s Head Mountain and the Blouberg beach where you can enjoy the twilight sitting on the grass with a glass of wine.

2. Mossel Bay
Mossel bay is a great place to spend Christmas on a beach.
LOCATION: Garden Route- George to Mosselbay Region
GETTING THERE: Fly to George Airport or hire a vehicle from Cape Town and Self Drive
WHERE TO STAY: Local Hotels or Airbnb. Book early since Christmas is the peak season and finding accommodation is difficult.
I have spent a couple Christmases in the Garden route area as well as visited it throughout the year. My family lives in this region so that is where we stay. You can spend your days exploring different regions along the coast.
I would also suggest taking a boat cruise around Seal Island in Mosselbay, enjoying the markets at Hartenbos beach, indulging in the concerts at the ATKV Theater, or heading out on a beach hike to a Shipwreck in Glentana. You can also explore the wineries in the nearby winery regions such as Jakkalsvlei.
At Mosselbay point, you can enjoy a small hike and connect with nature while the daisies keeping you entertained. South Africa is renowned for their food and you will not have a shortage of restaurant choices indulging on fresh seafood.
There are also many beaches to visit in the area with plenty of entertainment and facilities over the Christmas period.

Morocco
Christmas on a beach in Morocco? That definitely wasn’t something that I had thought off. That is why I love these collaboration posts. You get so many ideas from people with so many different life experiences. Morocco apparently has the ideal climate if you truly want to enjoy the beach.
3. Essaouira
Morocco provides some great options to spend Christmas on a beach.
LOCATION: Essaouira, Morocco
GETTING THERE: Easiest way to get there is by train
WHERE TO STAY: Riad Le Grand Large
After a lifetime of Christmas and NYE in Spain (with the only exception of a Christmas we spent in Edinburgh, celebrating Hogmanay), and being tired of living the same traditions over and over again; last year we decided to travel to Morocco – our neighboring country – to spend these dates differently.
Thus, we made a road trip along the Moroccan coast from Rabat to Agadir and planned in advance that we would spend NYE in the coastal town of Essaouira, famous for attracting tourism all year round and also for its beaches with perfect waves for surfing. Said and done, on December 30 we arrived at the town and booked two nights in a beautiful riad in the historic center.
To our surprise, there was some more movement than we thought we would find. The streets were full of tourists day and night thanks to the perfect temperatures, the restaurants also overflowing and the beaches… as wonderful as we had expected. Turns out it is one of the best times of the year to visit Essaouira!
Extensive, free of horrible constructions as in other parts of the world, and quite calm. With the water at a very good temperature to cool at noon, when the heat tightened. And always with the Moroccan touch, since we were offered a mint tea constantly. We will be back.

NORTH AMERICA
I have always wanted to spend Christmas on a beach in Mexico and I am so glad that someone sent in a suggestion that included it. There is so much to explore in North America and using the Christmas holidays to do just that sounds perfect.
Have you spent Christmas on a beach in North America? If so which place was your favorite and have you ticked any of these off your list yet?
USA
While I haven’t spent Christmas on a beach in the United States of America, Shawn has been in the country for the festivities. He talks about how the streets get lit up and huge Christmas trees get decorated.
It all sounds very festive to me. I can only imagine how much fun spending Christmas on a beach in the country would be like.
4. Key West, Florida
If you want to spend Christmas on a beach in USA then why not Key West in Florida?
LOCATION: Key West, Florida
GETTING THERE: Fly: For the best rates, fly into Miami International (MIA) and then take a short flight hop into Key West (EYW)
Drive: A Key West road trip from anywhere in south Florida is always a good idea, but allow yourself 2 extra days for the drive (and traffic)
Fly then Drive: Fly into Miami and rent a car for the 3-5 hour drive to Key West, depending on traffic.
WHERE TO STAY: We love Heron House or the oceanfront Southernmost House Hotel
Key West, Florida is the perfect place to spend Christmas and then ring in the New Year! Winter temps here average in the mid-80’s (F), and the warm ocean currents are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving one of the most pristine reefs in the western hemisphere.
Christmas is a festive time in the Conch Republic. Start your day with a non-denominational Christmas church celebration on the sand at Smathers Beach or Higgs Beach, then spend the rest of the day celebrating Key West-style — with a pub crawl on Duval Street, relaxing by the hotel pool, noshing on some fresh Florida spiny lobster and key lime pie, and taking in a fiery sunset at Mallory Square.
Being in Key West over the holidays means lots of parties, time spent with friends, and being on the water. So be sure and take a sunset cruise (with Champagne or a side of snorkeling) to fully appreciate the beautiful water — it’s one of the most fun things to do in Key West!
As the week after Christmas comes to end, the party is just getting started so don’t give up that hotel room quite yet.
Ringing in the New Year is a Key West tradition and one the most popular times of year with some of the most outrageous countdown celebrations you’ll ever see — a drag queen named Sushi being lowered in her champagne shoe at Bourbon Street, a conch shell dropped at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, and a pirate wench lowered from the mast of a tall ship at the Schooner Wharf Bar. Very happy holidays!

5. Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Cape Cod is another great place to spend Christmas on a beach.
LOCATION: Cape Cod, Massachusetts
WHERE TO STAY: Make sure you plan ahead of time, as many hotels and B&Bs are closed seasonally. During Christmastime, the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club is an elegant choice on the waterfront of Harwich. In Plymouth, there is the Mirbeau Inn and Spa for an upscale experience. It is not on the water but is cosy for the winter nestled among the pine forest native to the area.
GETTING THERE: Guests can fly into Boston Logan airport as the main airport. Most ferries and trains o not run in the winter, so driving with a rental car is usually the best option. There also are in-state flights via Cape Air that go to Hyannis.
Cape Cod, Massachusetts is flooded with tourists every summer as they hope to catch a square of sand. But this gorgeous space is wonderful in the wintertime too. Town all up and down ‘the Cape’ celebrate Christmas in a traditional way, from singalongs with the Cape Symphony to light displays in Falmouth.
The quintessential Colonial-style home and businesses look stunning covered in lights and tinsel. If you’re hearty, strolls along the National Seashore are beautiful, as most beaches are empty this time of year. Closer to the base of the Cape is Plymouth, which also has its fair share of traditional cheer, like the annual holiday strolls at the Plimouth Plantation.

6. Oahu, Hawaii
Another great place to spend Christmas on a beach in the USA is Oahu in Hawaii
LOCATION: Oahu, Hawaii U.S.A
GETTING THERE: Arrive by plane into Honolulu International.
WHERE TO STAY: Hilton Hawaiian Village is one of my favourite resorts on the Island. Super touristy, but in a generally good way. (Be sure to try the Lanikiai Juicery on-site) They have different types of rooms to suit your budget.
It is outside of the hustle and bustle of Waikiki but still close enough to experience it. If you are visiting with kids, you can also check out Disney’s Aulani in Ko’Olina. It’s a magical property and the enclosed lagoons are perfect for little swimmers but be prepared to pay, it is one of the most expensive resorts on the Island. The surrounding area of Ko’Olina is also a really great place to explore!
Oahu is a really great place to spend Christmas. The beaches do get very crowed during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I recommend a quick visit in the morning and then exploring some other parts of the island.
Just be sure to check online before heading out to make sure it will be open on the holiday. Local malls are fun to visit during the season too! Local malls will have Christmas themed performances, snow machines and are beautifully decorated just like the mainland USA.
Of course, little ones can get the chance to meet and pose for a photo with “Shaka Santa” AKA “Aloha Santa” as well.

Mexico
Ever since I struck up a conversation with a couple of Mexicans during a long layover at an airport, I found myself yearning to visit the country. The gorgeous beaches, the spectacular sunsets and the friendly people are all draws. It definitely makes sense that travel bloggers suggested spending Christmas on a beach in Mexico.
7. Tulum
I have always wanted to spend Christmas on a beach in Mexio and Tulum looks divine.
LOCATION: Tulum, Riviera Maya
GETTING THERE: You can easily get to Tulum from Cancun international airport, from where there are regular ADO buses. The bus ride takes around 2 hours.
WHERE TO STAY: Tulum has a plethora of good accommodation options, either in town (known as Tulum Pueblo) or at the beach (Tulum Playa). In Tulum Pueblo, El Jardin De Frida is an excellent boutique hostel that has dorms as well as private rooms and small, fully equipped apartments.
There is a gorgeous garden, a nice onsite bar and a fantastic breakfast buffet. In Tulum Playa, Azucar is located in Sian Kaan reserve and offers good cabanas right at the beach.
Tulum is one of the most popular destinations in Riviera Maya, and home to one of the best beaches in Mexico. It’s an excellent place to spend your holidays, including Christmas, when the weather is nice with warm – though luckily not terribly hot – days and the chance of going to the beach.
While the city may get more crowded than usual during the Christmas season, the beach is so large that you will hardly feel overwhelmed with people.
When in Tulum, make sure to head to Tulum archaeological site. It’s not the largest one in Mexico, but it’s famous for directly facing the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea and for giving access to a small, gorgeous cove where you can swim – just make sure to wear your swimsuit and to take a towel with you.
Another beach within easy reach from Tulum (other than the main one in town) is Akumal, famous for the sea turtles that live there and that you can easily admire when snorkelling.

Guatemala
Looking for an exotic location in North America to spend Christmas on a beach? Have you considered Guatemala? What will gorgeous sandy beaches and plenty of options when it comes to things to do, this may be the perfect match for you.
8. Monterrico Beach
Christmas on a beach in an exotic destination… Guatemala anyone?
LOCATION: Monterrico Beach
GETTING THERE: Monterrico Beach is located on the Pacific Coast of Guatemala, west of the Port of San Jose and east of the border of El Salvador. Although it’s three hours from the capital of Guatemala City and Antigua, the colonial city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s still the most popular beach destination in Guatemala.
During Christmas, Easter and other major holidays and festivals in Guatemala, most locals drive to Monterrico with family and friends in a car, minivan or even a bus rented for the purpose of holding as many people in it as possible. For visitors, the easiest way to get there is via tourist shuttle bus from the major centres.
Not only are the tourist shuttle buses safe and affordable, but they pick up and drop off at the major hotels. Public buses are also available but can add considerably to the travel time.
WHERE TO STAY: Dos Mundos Pacific Resort
Monterrico Beach is a beach composed of black volcanic that’s famous as a turtle nesting beach, backpacker’s hangout and beach destination during Christmas, Easter and other popular holidays. It’s also known for its powerful surf so isn’t really ideal for swimming or even walking as the black sand can heat up to a scorching temperature under the midday sun. But that doesn’t stop thousands of people from flocking to Monterrico Beach during the holidays.
It’s a popular destination to wrap up a busy Christmas season that begins on December 7th with the Dia del Diablo ( the torching of an effigy of the devil to banish bad spirits), continues with the posadas (nightly processions re-enacting Mary and Jospeh’s search for an inn in Bethlehem) and Christmas Eve or Noche Buena featuring traditional food such as tamales and ponche (a hot fruit punch), fireworks, attending mass and staying up all night.
The next day, families head to beaches such as Monterrico to relax and recover from Christmas festivities. They set up loungers or rent palapas, listen to music, eat ceviche or fried fish, spend time with family and splash about in the shallow waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Costa Rica
Another intriguing spot that was suggested when it came to spending Christmas on a beach was Costa Rica. It sounded so good that I wanted to hop on a plane and head there right away. There is just one issue… I need to wait for Christmas!
9. Playa Avellanas
Playa Avellanas is another place where you can spend Christmas on a beach.
LOCATION: Playa Avellanas, Costa Rica
GETTING THERE: Playa Avellanas is about a 30 minute drive south from the popular beach town of Tamarindo and 80 km from Liberia International Airport. The easiest way to reach Playa Avellanas is by car.
WHERE TO STAY: Drift Away Eco-Lodge
Playa Avellanas is located on the Guanacaste region on the Northern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, an area famous for its diverse landscapes and wide range variety of activities. Most tourists will end up in Tamarindo but those who go a little further off the beaten track, will discover a picture-perfect paradise of Playa Avellanas.
Playa Avellanas is best known for its long stretch of beach with great surfing conditions and laid-back vibes giving you a taste of the real “Pura Vida” lifestyle. Compared to the business of Tamarindo, Playa Avellanas offers a nice escape, it’s an area with just a few hotels and a couple of restaurants.
The most popular one is Lola’s, named after Lola, the pig, who can be frequently found lounging around the shade by the ocean.
Playa Avellanas is a particularly great destination over the Christmas holidays when visitors and locals alike fill the beach and the local bars and restaurants are buzzing with activity. There are plenty of fun activities to take part it during the day, like a horseback ride, zip lining, SUP, kayaking and more.
Plus, the nearby town of Los Pargos also hosts local fiestas that offer a great sneak peek into the local culture for visitors.

Asia
We have spent all our Christmases in Asia. From Goa in India to the Philippines, there are so many options when it comes to spending Christmas on a beach. You are quite literally spoiled for choice.
One thing that you should note is that not all the countries have a large Christian population so while there may not be much in terms of festivities, they are still great places to visit in the season.
India
Being an Indian, we have spent most of our Christmases at home in Goa which definitely fits the bill when it comes to the perfect location to spend Christmas on a beach. I guess this is largely due to the fact that the state has a large Christian population when compared to the rest of India.
10. Goa
Never underestimate how serene Christmas on a beach in Goa can be.
LOCATION: Agonda & Galgibag, South Goa
GETTING THERE: There are international flights to Goa’s Dabolim Airport, or you can travel here easily within India by train, bus or plane. The nearest railway station is at Canacona (close to Agonda)
WHERE TO STAY: Secret Garden, Agonda or La Mangrove, Galgibag
Goa might be known as one of India’s busiest and up-beat destinations, but there’s a quieter, more tranquil side to Goa too. While the partiers head to north or central Goa, south Goa is more of a relaxed scene with small towns, winding coastal roads, beachside yoga and some incredible natural beauty.
Agonda is one of our favourite beaches and although it is not exactly off the beaten path, it is definitely quieter than neighbouring Palolem. There are plenty of restaurants and bars – perfect for a sundowner and oceanfront fish barbeque.
At Christmas, the tempo ramps up a notch as people from around the world head to Goa for the festive season – for a yoga retreat, dose of winter sun, or just some time to chill on the beach.
Goa is home to a significant Christian community and so Christmas is celebrated in style – with many of the Portuguese style churches beautifully decorated for the festive season. We also recommend taking some time away from the sand, too to explore some of Goa’s nature by visiting one of the spice farms or nature reserves – Netravali is an easy drive from Canacona and very beautiful and is home to Tanshikar Spice Farm.
For those who want to be away from it all, we recommend La Mangrove – an eco-friendly glamping (luxury camping) retreat just steps away from Galgibag beach in the extreme south of Goa.
Don’t expect any parties or banana pancakes here, but rather a serene retreat and sneak peek into how Goa used to be. Christmas and New Year are peak season – so make sure you book your accommodation and travel well in advance – preferably several months ahead.

Korea
I honestly never thought of Korea as a place to spend Christmas and so when one of the travel bloggers suggested spending Christmas on a beach in Busan, I was intrigued and a bit excited to hear what she had to say.
11. Busan
Haeundae Beach in Busan was another suggestion.
LOCATION: Busan
GETTING THERE: KTX (high speed train) and subway
WHERE TO STAY: Haeundae Grand Hotel
Christianity in South Korea is a rather new religion so celebrating Christmas in Korea only became popular a couple of years ago and that too mainly for the religious people. For the non-Christians and Buddhists, Christmas is not that much of a family holiday but a day to go shopping or to spend together as a couple.
Even though it is not celebrated in the same way as in the west, Koreans still love the whole Christmas atmosphere with the music, the decorations, etc. All over the country department stores and central squares are setting up with giant Christmas trees. Korean pop bands release their Christmas singles and coffee shops sell Christmas themed drinks.
In Busan during the Christmas and New Year season there are loads of events happening. The Busan Christmas Tree Festival occurs in the city centre and on the most famous beach of Busan, the Haeundae Rockgo Lighting Festival takes place.
This is an extremely popular light festival that takes place from just before till after Christmas. If you are plan on spending Christmas day on the beach in Busan, be prepared for a big crown and layer up to beat the cold weather.

Malaysia
While Christmas isn’t one of the popular festivals in Malaysia, the tropical paradise does have a number of gorgeous spots where you can spend Christmas on a beach. Beautiful views, luxury accommodation (or budgeted ones if that is what you want) and delicious food is all part of the deal and it is rather hard to resist.
12. Penang
Penang in Malaysia is another place to spend Christmas on a beach.
LOCATION: Penang Island, Malaysia
GETTING THERE: Penang airport is linked to many of Southeast Asia’s major towns and internationally via Qatar Airways, or you can get here easily by train from the south of Thailand.
WHERE TO STAY: George Town, Penang’s main city, has a great selection of cozy boutique hotels. Otherwise, you can stay in one of Penang’s beachside resorts, such as Rasa Sayang and Lone Pine Hotel, in Batu Ferringhi on the northern coast.
Penang island is a perfect place to spend a Christmas in the tropics. Given the Muslim majority in Malaysia, the Catholic Holiday season is not really seen as a religious holiday, but more of a chance to hang out with friends and party.
Locals usually spend their Xmas eve going out to dine at a fancy restaurant, followed by spending the nightclubbing — but when in Penang, you may as well prefer to stay by the beach.
Batu Ferringhi is the most touristy and yet easy option: the beach here is long, sheltered by many resorts, and has plenty of restaurants and cafes to spend some decent Christmas time with family or a lover. But there are other options in the south of the island: Balik Pulau, the southwestern corner of Penang, has more nature and a relaxed feel.
Pantai Pasir Panjang and Gertak Sanggul are two quieter options here that make for a perfect relaxing Christmas getaway, especially if your craving is local, fresh seafood — the prawns here are plain delicious.

Maldives
Gorgeous beautiful Maldives has so many islands and so many places that make it a dream vacation no matter which time of the year you visit. The fact that it makes a gorgeous spot to spend Christmas on a beach should come as no surprise.
13. Emboodhu Finolhu Island
Maldives has a lot of islands where you can spend Christmas on a beach.
LOCATION: Emboodhu Finolhu island, South Male Atoll
GETTING THERE: We flew from Chennai to Male through Colombo on SriLankan Airlines. Taj Exotica is located not too far from the Malé airport and is just a 20-minute boat ride away, no need for any seaplanes.
WHERE TO STAY: Taj Exotica
Most winters our family is on a beach somewhere! From Bora Bora to the Bahamas we have been to a few but one that tops our list is our trip to the Maldives, where we spent a few days watching the sun come up and listening to the ocean from our overwater villas.
Taj Exotica Resort and Spa is located on the Emboodhu Finolhu Island which used to be called ‘Three Coconut Island’. It is one of the largest lagoons in the Maldives. While anytime is a good time to visit the Maldives since the temperatures hover over a balmy 80F, the best time to visit the Maldives is from November to April.
You are guaranteed a Magical Holiday in the Maldives anywhere you stay, the water is crystal clear, the food and service are amazing and there is abundant marine life. We loved our stay at Taj Exotica in the Maldives last December during our winter break and it was one of the best Christmas on a beach!
By Priya from Outside Suburbia
Philippines
Philippines is a country that comprises of numerous islands and it has gained popularity for its crystal clear waters and lovely beaches. We found ourselves spending Christmas on a beach in Cebu last year and it was divine. Definitely one of the better choices.
14. Coron
Let’s not forget Coron in the Philippines.
LOCATION: Coron, Palawan
GETTING THERE: Fly from Manila to Francisco B. Reyes Airport on the island of Busuanga. From there you can arrange transport to your Coron resort, which usually involves a 45-minute drive and possibly a boat ride (if you’re staying in the islands).
WHERE TO STAY: Club Paradise Resort
Christmas is a huge holiday throughout the Philippines, so you can count on hearing Christmas music and seeing Christmas decorations if you visit during any of the “brrrr months” (September through December).
But if you want your Christmas traditions served with a heaping slice of tropical paradise, there’s no better place than Coron, Palawan, which has been named the world’s #1 beach destination by Travel + Leisure on more than one occasion.
If you stay at Club Paradise Resort, which is on a 19-hectare private island in a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, you’ll have several beautiful beaches to choose from. One offers stunning sunrise views, another offers killer sunsets and spectacular snorkelling (we saw sea turtles, giant clams, reef sharks, and octopus), and there’s even a “Secret Beach” for romantic picnics.
If that’s not enough t0 inspire some Christmas cheer, you can go island-hopping to any number of nearby beaches, all of which are pristine, practically empty, and thriving with marine life as well. It’s an incredible place to spend our favourite holiday!

Singapore
Did you know that Siloso beach in Singapore is a great place to spend Christmas on a beach?
LOCATION: Sentosa, Singapore
GETTING THERE: Take a bus, train or even better the Cable Car from Mainland. Many people travel from VivioCity by taxi or Grab. There is an small entrance fee to get onto the island (even with a taxi), but once you get there, transportation is free to get around the island.
WHERE TO STAY: There are some really great hotels on Sentosa Island itself including the uber lux Capella, any of the Resorts World Sentosa hotels and W Singapore – Sentosa Cove. You can also stay on Mainland and visit Sentosa for the day.
While Singapore isn’t known as a beach destination, the city-state does have a few places where you can stick your feet in the ocean. The north, facing Malaysia, has some of the most pristine beaches in the country, but the place to visit during the festive season for active explorers is definitely Sentosa Island.
The island comes alive during the holidays with the Minions at Universal Studios donning Santa hats, Resorts World becomes a Festive gastronomic paradise and One15 Marina has its very own Christmas Light Parade. But beyond all the amazing attractions on Sentosa, you can also enjoy the beaches of the island.
There are three main beaches that cater for different tastes. There’s active Siloso, family-oriented Palawan and hipster haunt Tanjong. The beaches are always packed with events during this time. In 2018, Palawan had the amazing Island Lights with illuminating art.
Tanjong usually has a beach buffet that overflows with local and international dishes. And just after Christmas, Siloso throws the biggest party of the year, Siloso Beach Countdown, with a fantastic fireworks display.
If this all sounds too much, then there’s always the Southern Islands. This collection of tropical islands is easily reached by ferry and is a quieter option for a Christmas beach escape. The cluster is made of three islands, St John’s, Kusu and Seven Sisters. You can even make the best of both worlds and charter a yacht from One15 Marine on Sentosa to one of the islands! Now that’s one way to spend Christmas in style.

Sri Lanka
Another gorgeous country to choose when it comes to spending Christmas on a beach is Sri Lanka. I fell in love with it when we visited and while a large part of it was due to the beautiful landscapes and friendly people, I have to confess that the delicious food did play a role.
16. Unawatuna
Unawatuna is just one of the places where you an spend Christmas on a beach in Sri Lanka.
LOCATION: Unawatuna, Sri Lanka
GETTING THERE: Take a train from Colombo (the capital) taking less than 2 hours
WHERE TO STAY: Stay on the main Unawatuna Beach for a variety of incredible beachfront properties
It’s always interesting spending the Christmas period in faraway lands, especially when the country may not celebrate Christmas themselves. You have the option of either trying to replicate your home customs and festivities, embrace the local antics or try to have a combination of the two.
Unawatuna is a stunning coastal town in Southern Sri Lanka and is the perfect place to experience a fantastic new culture, explore a beautifully exotic destination and still have familiar elements from home to remind you of old Saint Nick.
Unlike the northern parts of Sri Lanka during the Christmas period you’ll likely have beautiful sunshine, clear skies and calm seas. This means on Christmas Day you can swim in the crystal blue waters, snorkel with tropical fish and enjoy beachfront coconuts.
Besides the water action you’ll also find the famous Sri Lankan stilt fisherman and the serene Japanese Peace Pagoda up on the cliff side, a short walk from the beach, where you can enjoy amazing views across the horizon.
The festive period is all about the food right? Well Sri Lanka is home to some of the tastiest local dishes from around the world. If you fancy something more traditional, you’ll also be spoiled by some of the local hotels’ options and will find a very festive atmosphere with a tropical twist!”

Thailand
Thailand has become a popular destination among travellers, and it continues to be visited during almost all the months of the year. With its gorgeous coasts and beautiful coves, it wasn’t a surprise that some of the travel bloggers talked about spending Christmas on a beach in Thailand.
17. Koh Phi Phi
Koh Phi Phi is another choice when it comes to spending Christmas on a beach.
LOCATION: Koh Phi Phi, Thailand
GETTING THERE: Ferry from Phuket, Ao Nang, or Koh Lanta to reach Koh Phi Phi. Ferry transfer options run every day.
WHERE TO STAY: Backpacker option: Hangover Hostel ; Luxury option: Phi Phi the Beach Resort
If you are looking for a beach location to spend a quiet Christmas… Koh Phi Phi is NOT that place. Koh Phi Phi is one of the smaller Thai islands located a quick ferry ride away from other major tourist hubs such as Phuket and Koh Lanta.
The island is small but home a beautiful beach and is filled with cafes, bars, and restaurants for any budget. Koh Phi Phi is home to high-end hotels as well as quirky and hippy backpacker hostels, fancy beach side restaurants and low-key bean bag-covered rooftop bars. There’s one thing that links everyone together in Koh Phi Phi though, and that’s the party scene.
Christmas is no exception, and in fact it’s all the better reason to party. Koh Phi Phi’s Ibiza Pool Party is a hub for special party events, and during Christmas time you’ll find the pool filled with bikini-clad tourists in Santa hats.
Many Southeast Asian island bars host fire shows on the beach, and Koh Phi Phi’s fire shows may be the best of them all. Christmas is when the big guns come out – larger speakers, bigger fires, taller human pyramids, and a special guest: drunk Santa.
If you want to have a memorable Christmas on the beach, one filled with alcohol buckets and shenanigans, Koh Phi Phi is your island. It’s best to book accommodation here ahead of time and be prepared to spend more than usual for a spot on the island during this festive time.

Vietnam
Shawn and I did get a chance to spend Christmas in Hoi An which itself was pretty splendid. I was happy to see that someone offered to talk about spending Christmas on a beach in the country. Definitely would go back during the season and a beach sounds like a nice place to be.
18. Mui Ne
Mui Ne is a great place to spend Christmas on a beach in Vietnam.
LOCATION: Mui Ne
GETTING THERE: Getting to Mui Ne is fairly straightforward, although it does take some time. The best course of action is to fly into Tanh Son Nhat Airport (in Ho Chi Minh) and from there take the 4-5 hour sleeper bus from downtown (most buses go from Pham Ngu Lao).
WHERE TO STAY: Mui Ne hills
Culture-wise, Vietnam is a fairly untraditional place to pass a Christmas (although to be fair, there is a surprisingly large Christian population for a Southeast Asian country). Christmas trees are few and far between, and roast turkey is — shall we say — on the sparing side…
That said, if you find yourself eyeing up Vietnam for a Christmas holiday, the beach town of Mui Ne is one of the better places to spend it.
Located on the south-central coastline, Mui Ne is a bit of an offbeat tourist destination that exploded out of a tiny fishing village. Just 20 years ago, there was little more to Mui Ne than some dragon fruit farms and a traditional fishing village, but today you’ll find a hodgepodge of resorts, backpacker hostels, watersports centers, and beach bars lining the tropical shoreline.
The vibrant mix of culture and travellers makes spending Christmas in Mui Ne a pretty special experience! Typically, a few of the bars or hostels will put on an event, like that of Mui Ne Hills who last year threw a huge party complete with a roast dinner and plenty of booze. Mui Ne Hills is one of the most popular places to stay in town, since they’ve got a budget backpacker hostel and mid range hotel rooms all on the same property.

Europe
Christmas in Europe is definitely something that a lot of travellers look forward to. While a white Christmas definitely is on the books, spending Christmas on a beach is an alternative if you head to southern Europe. This year that is exactly where I want to be if everything falls in place that is. Let’s take a look at what other travel bloggers have suggested.
Spain
Spain’s gorgeous coast is no secret. Located in the southern region of Europe, the climate is definitely a lot warmer. While you may not be able to get into the water, it still is a popular spot to spend Christmas on a beach. Let’s take a look at where travel bloggers say you should go.
19. Tenerife
Tenerife in Spain should definitely make your list of places where you can spend Christmas on a beach.
LOCATION: Tenerife, Spain
GETTING THERE: Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island and you can get there by plane, from the main cities of Spain or from other big capitals in Europe.
WHERE TO STAY: Hotel Silken Atlántida Santa Cruz
When you are born in a country with 4 seasons and all your childhood Christmases had at least cold weather if not even snow, spending a Christmas at the beach, wearing trousers and t-shirt, it feels somehow unnatural. I had this feeling when we landed in Tenerife, Spain, on Christmas Eve and there were 20 Celsius outsides.
So if you ask me, yes… The weather in Tenerife in December is pretty perfect!
The island was ready for celebrating and everywhere we could see Christmas trees, Christmas decorations on the streets and Poinsettia flowers (known in Spain as the Christmas flower). In the big cities around the island, Christmas markets are organized in the city centre.
Spain in general has different traditions for this time of year and you can experience them here. For example, children receive gifts on January 6th when they celebrate the Three Kings, not on Christmas day.
In Tenerife Christmas Eve (or Noche Buena how it is called in Spanish) is usually a family holiday, celebrated with a delicious dinner before the church ceremony. The restaurants are open, and they offer a special menu for this event, so you can celebrate even as a tourist.
On 25th of December only some shops are closed, but restaurants are open, so you don’t need to worry that you won’t find a place to eat. On Christmas day you can go to beach and lay on the black sand, visit some of the attractions on the island, climb El Teide or just take a walk around the Christmas market to feel the festivity atmosphere.

Oceania
Heading out to the countries in Oceania has always been on our list, if only the tickets weren’t that costly. We hope to make it there someday. Spending Christmas on a beach in one of them would seem ideal and I was happy to see that there were travel bloggers who added it to the list. Let’s take a look at the options.
Australia
I never realize quite how big and gorgeous Australia was until I started doing my research in the hope that Shawn and I would visit it one day soon. The coast of the country is legendry and it did not come as a surprise that some of the travel bloggers thought that it would be a great place to spend Christmas on a beach.
20. Bondi Beach
Bondi beach is another fun place to spend Christmas.
LOCATION: Bondi Beach
GETTING THERE: Bondi is easily accessible from the city by train to Bondi Junction, followed by a short bus ride or walk down to the beach. Parking is limited and expensive, so public transportation is generally the best option. (Trains and buses still operate on Christmas Day.)
WHERE TO STAY: Although accommodation can be very expensive over the holidays, you’ll find a wide range of options at Bondi, from backpacker hostels to luxury hotels or apartments. Best to book far in advance, as places will sell out quickly. Good budget options include Bondi Backpackers and Noah’s Bondi Backpackers.
Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere may be a bit different than what you’re used to- think hot summer days, BBQs and beers, and swims in the beach. There’s no better way to experience this than at Sydney’s quintessential Bondi Beach.
On Christmas Day, expect large crowds on the beach, but it’s all a very fun and festive atmosphere. There are free BBQs, maintained by the council, so you can grill up a Christmas Day lunch- but remember that the beach is an alcohol-free zone.
You’re likely to come across all sorts of people enjoying the day- backpackers and expats, enjoying their first Aussie Christmas, families, and groups of friends. The famous Bondi Surf Lifesavers are always on patrol, even on Christmas Day, and work hard to keep everyone safe on a busy day, in and out of the water.
Chances are usually high of seeing a few surfers in Santa costumes too. Bring along your Santa hat, some sunscreen, and get ready for a really fun day out!

21. Byron Bay
Byron bay is another lovely place in Australia to spend Christmas on a beach.
LOCATION: Byron Bay, Australia
GETTING THERE: The closest airport is the Ballina Byron Bay airport, but it is rather small and only services a few airline carriers. The largest nearby airport is the Brisbon airport, 2 hours north of Byron, and services international airlines.
If you ask me though, the best way to get to Byron is a good old fashion full day or overnight road trip from Sydney International Airport. Either way, you’ll need a car.
WHERE TO STAY: The charm of Byron Bay is old beach houses and there are plenty of great options on Air BnB. Byron is such a walkable town, so you can pretty much stay in any location. For the downtown, experience stay between Jonson St. and Massinger St. and for a more residential feel stay around Bangalow St.
Byron Bay beach is not only one of the best beaches in Australia, but the best place to spend a sandy Christmas at the beach. Byron is known as a relaxed hippy beach that is any surfer’s paradise, but regardless if you surf, the endless white sand beaches, unique wildlife, charming historic town, and the fantastic outdoor adventures make sure that everyone in your family will have a holly jolly Christmas.
Christmas seafood BBQs are popular in Australia for Christmas, so if you have time head to one of Ballina’s fresh fish market to pick up loads of fresh prawns and local fish to throw on the barbie. It is also customary to drink chilled red sparkling wine, which you can pick up from any supermarket. After a Christmas feast, you can head down the beach to build a sandman or do what the locals do and strike up a game of beach cricket.
If you are there for a few days make sure you hike to the Byron lighthouse for a chance to see dolphins, sea eagles, swamp wallabies, and kookaburras. The hike takes you along the breath-taking coastline and to Australia’s easternmost point – which is a great photo opportunity.
It is also worth exploring the historic old town eating smashed avo at hipster cafes, drinking flat whites, and grabbing a local beer and dancing to live music at one of the pubs.

Fabulous list, but it's missing New Zealand. We are also southern hemisphere and we spend every Christmas on the beach.

I was rather disappointed that no one contributed with Christmas on a beach in New Zealand. I haven't personally visited the country so I couldn't fill in the blank myself. :( Oh well... One more item on the bucketlist I guess. :)

If I celebrated Christmas, I would vote for the Philippines, coz the Filipinos take Christmas period seriously! You'd have traditional star decorations all over the place (since September!), and you can really go for church services quite easily from what I've observed, and the people have a fellowship mood around Christian notable days, so that it wouldn't be just any beach holiday, but genuinely Christmas at the beach.

That is exactly where we spent Christmas last year! This year I was thinking of heading to Europe but our plans are not fixed in stone yet. :)
