1. Saguaro National Park, Arizona

Tuscon has mild temperatures making it one of the top picks to spend February in the USA.

Tuscon has mild temperatures making it one of the top picks to spend February in the USA.

Location: Tucson, Arizona

Getting There: If you are flying from somewhere else to visit Saguaro National Park, you should consider flying in to the Phoenix airport.  There are many flight options and they are usually lower priced than other airports in the area.  From the Phoenix airport to Saguaro National Park is a very easy and scenic drive that takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Where to Stay: You’ll want to stay in the city of Tucson while visiting Saguaro National Park.  The park is divided into 2 sections and Tucson divides the sections, making it very convenient if you are staying there.  You’ll find excellent dining options as well as a wide variety of hotels and vacation rentals. The JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort and Spa is a luxury hotel stay, whereas Hotel McCoy is an artsy fun motel that is popular in the area.

February is an excellent time to visit Saguaro National Park. While temperatures in most of the US are very cold in February, the temperature in Tucson is very mild.  It is a great way to warm up and see a bit of sunshine!

It’s also wise to visit Tucson in the winter because it gets very hot there during the summer.  In February, there is less chance of seeing Rattle snakes too, as it’s not quite warm enough!

Saguaro National Park is divided into two sections. The Rincon Mountain District and the Tucson Mountain District.  Each section takes about one day to explore.

Both sections of Saguaro National Park have easy hikes and scenic drives that you can do to explore the park.  You can even see ancient petroglyphs here. This is a great park to watch the sunset, with silhouettes of the cactus, the scenery is incredible.

Of course, the star of the park is the large Saguaro Cactus that can grow to be over 40 feet tall! You’ll be able to see the Saguaro as well as many other kinds of cactus while visiting the park.

Even though temperatures will be mild in February be sure and bring sunscreen and plenty of water.  There is not much shade anywhere in Saguaro National Park.

2. San Diego, California

San Diego is the perfect spot if you are looking for water activities in February in the USA.

San Diego is the perfect spot if you are looking for water activities in February in the USA.

Location: San Diego, California

Getting there: The most convenient way to arrive is direct to the San Diego airport and from there rent a car to best explore downtown San Diego as well as the beachside.

Where to stay: It’s likely you are visiting San Diego for the beaches, water activities, and outdoor activities so staying on Coradano Island is great for families and couples looking for a resort-style beach getaway whereas solo travelers or outdoor junkies would bode well staying in La Jolla it is great for water sports and exploring the coves and offers low budget hostels and nice hotels close to the beach.

February in San Diego means you will experience mild temperatures that are perfectly pleasant for being outside without breaking a sweat. There are plenty of nearby day hikes you can pick from; Torrey Pines State Park has many scenic options. An epic sunset spot is Sunset Cliffs, get there early to get a good spot!

Swimming in the ocean at this time of year will not be ideal but that doesn’t mean you can’t try other water activities like surfing, kayaking, hydro-biking, or swimming in your hotel pool. If your hotel doesn’t have that great of a pool you can even book a San Diego hotel pool day pass!

For a bit of history head to Old Town San Diego, aka the “birthplace” of San Diego. You’ll see a lot of its Spanish heritage in the design of the buildings. It is another reason why it is a great place to spend February in the USA.

3. Redwood State And National Parks, California

Redwood State and National Parks are one of the top spots to spend February in the USA.

Redwood State and National Parks are one of the top spots to spend February in the USA.

Location: Redwood State and National Parks, California

Getting there: The Redwoods are a bit challenging to get to- the nearest large airport is San Francisco, 278 miles away. From San Francisco, you’ll drive north along Highway 101 for five and a half hours- or, for a truly scenic drive, consider traveling along Highway 1, from San Francisco to Leggett.

Where to stay: Given the parks are spread apart along the Northern California coast, the town of Trinidad is a good midway point. Consider a stay at the View Crest Lodge, which offers a hot tub, a variety of rooms (some with cozy fireplaces!), and free breakfast.

February is an excellent time to visit the Redwoods, the tallest living things on the planet.  Because of the temperate coastal weather, you can still comfortably explore the ancient groves of trees here- all while avoiding the crowds of summer.

The best way to explore this little slice of heaven is to try any of the amazing hikes in the redwoods– for example, the Karl Knapp Trail will take you through a forest, dense with primeval ferns and 300-foot tall trees, and even through two tree tunnels, carved out of massive fallen redwoods. Alternatively, the Fern Canyon trail will take you through a gorge, whose walls are literally dripping in ferns and moss, that looks positively prehistoric- in fact, it looks so otherworldly, it’s been used as a shooting location for Jurassic Park: A Lost World.

Telluride is a great place to enjoy all things snow in February in the USA.

Then, after your climb, you can reward yourself with an ice cold beverage from Smuggler’s Brewpub.

5. Tampa, Florida

Looking for a nice sunny location to spend February in the USA? Tampa is one perfect spot!

Looking for a nice sunny location to spend February in the USA? Tampa is one perfect spot!

Location: Tampa

Getting There: Tampa International Airport is the easiest and most convenient way to travel.  You will need a car to get around town.  Whether you prefer to Uber or drive a rental, either option is easily accessible.

Where to Stay: Tampa Marriott Water Street

Tampa is the ideal location to visit in February.  Enjoy gorgeous sunny days and moderate temperatures that range on average highs of 70-76°F and lows of 57-60°F.

Each year the Annual Florida State Fair occurs in February.  It was established in 1904 and is a fun experience for the whole family.  With over 90+ rides, it is known for being the largest midway in North America.  This in itself makes Florida one of the best places to spend February in the USA, but there is more!

If you enjoy rides and attractions, you will also want to check out Busch Gardens in Tampa.  It has beautiful gardens, a zoo, roller coasters, and slower-paced kids rides.

Go shopping in Hyde Park Village which is just a short drive from the fairgrounds.  Here you will find delicious food offerings and an outdoor shopping district.  Enjoy a meal at Bartaco for some of the best tacos in Tampa.  You will want to save room for dessert.  Their churros come with two different dipping sauces that you won’t want to miss.

Stay downtown at the Tampa Marriott on Water Street.  Here you will be in the heart of the best things to do in Tampa. Walk the Riverwalk or take the water taxi to see many restaurants, bars, and fun hangouts such as Armature Works.  On the water, you can partake in watersports or even take a ferry to the charming city of St. Petersburg.

6. Biscayne National Park, Florida

Biscayne National Park is a great place to spend February in the USA if you enjoy the great outdoors!

Biscayne National Park is a great place to spend February in the USA if you enjoy the great outdoors!

Location: Biscayne National Park in Florida

Getting there: Get to Biscayne National Park by Bus, Plane, Train, or Car

Biscayne National Park is just outside of Miami, but it feels like an entirely different world. The 170,000 acre park protects several small islands, beautiful coral reefs, mangroves, and a spectacular array of marine life. It’s the perfect place for boating, kayaking, snorkeling, diving, swimming, and learning about the unique ecosystems on land and sea.

If the water is a little chilly, don’t worry– the best way to experience Biscayne is by boat anyway. 95% of the park is water, but the vast majority is crystal clear, and there are plenty of shallow areas where you can see right to the bottom of the ocean.

The Dante Fascell Visitor Center is the best starting point, where you can speak with park rangers and learn about the park, and plan out your visit. There are several guided tours that go to different locations. Boca Chita Key, with its classic lighthouse from the 1930s, is the most-visited island.

Another popular choice is to visit Jones Lagoon via boat, kayak, or paddleboard to see juvenile sharks, stingrays, and adorable sea turtles. Adams Key is the perfect place for a casual stroll and a picnic lunch when the weather is nice.

No matter where you choose to go in Biscayne, you won’t be disappointed!

7. Maui, Hawaii

Looking for an island paradise to spend February in the USA? Maui should be one of your top picks!

Looking for an island paradise to spend February in the USA? Maui should be one of your top picks!

Location: Maui, Hawaii

Getting There: Fly into Kahului Airport (the only way to get on the island)

Where To Stay: There are tons of resorts, hotels, and Airbnbs to choose from. I stayed in an Airbnb in the town of Kihei and loved the central location and being right on the beach away from the resorts.

February is a great time to visit Maui as it is the heart of shoulder season. You will miss the Christmas crowds and will be far ahead of the spring breakers. Plus, the airline prices are usually the cheapest at this time. While February is the rainy season on Maui, the weather really won’t have much effect on what activities you can do.

The average temperature doesn’t fluctuate too much from the rest of the year, and rain showers often only come in short bursts. Best of all, the ocean temperature is warm year-round averaging 77F/25C in February!

As you’ll have the perfect conditions to explore the island, be sure to rent a car to get around. Driving the Road to Hana is one of the top Maui experiences. You’ll definitely need a Jeep or all-wheel drive vehicle to feel safe navigating the hairpin turns of the jungle road. A car will also be necessary to catch the sunrise at the peak of Haleakala, Maui’s largest volcano.

Probably the best reason to visit Maui in February is that February is peak whale-watching season! Another experience that tops my Maui bucket list is snorkeling Molokini crater. In February, you can go beyond the crater and get an elusive humpback whale sighting. You would hardly need any more convincing to pick Maui as your destination to spend February in the USA.

8. Oahu, Hawaii

Oahu is a really gorgeous place to visit in February in the USA.

Oahu is a really gorgeous place to visit in February in the USA.

Location: Oahu, Hawaii

How to get there: Many major airlines fly into Oahu. Options available will be dependent on your starting point.

Where to stay: For central access to most activities and attractions stay in Waikiki. The Coconut Waikiki Hotel offers well priced accommodation a short walk from the main tourist drag.

If you’re seeking that perfect Winter holiday destination, a trip to Hawaii’s island of Oahu in February is pretty hard to top. February falls during the dry season when the average temperature ranges from a low of 17 degrees Celsius and a high of 25, making it perfect for outdoor activities without the heat of the day making it uncomfortable.

The island offers something for the itinerary of just about every kind of traveler. History buffs will love exploring the Pearl Harbor historic site while movie fans will delight in the sights at Kualoa Ranch, Hollywood’s Hawaii set. Naturally, being an idyllic island paradise, the water activities abound with snorkeling, parasailing, cruising and whale and dolphin spotting on offer, while a hike up Diamond Head will get the heart rate up while offering spectacular views over the island.

Oahu is known for its shopping so if you do happen to get a rainy day head to the Waikele outlets to fill the suitcase. Since Waikiki is the tourist hub there are plenty of delicious food options available. Dukes do a great buffet breakfast and coffee snobs should head to Bills Waikiki for the best coffee in town.

9. Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is one of the perfect places to spend February in the USA if you like history.

Savannah is one of the perfect places to spend February in the USA if you like history.

Location: Savannah, Georgia

Getting There: You can fly into Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, which is just 30 minutes outside the city. Otherwise, Jacksonville International Airport is a much bigger airport and only 2 hours from Savannah.

Where to Stay: The historic district is absolutely the best place to stay in Savannah – it’s within walking distance to just about everything and nestled in the charming houses and squares of the city. The Gastonian Historic Hotel is located in a historic house with lots of period details and quaint and cozy rooms.

During a weekend visit to Savannah, you should absolutely go on a house tour – there are many historic homes available to tour, but I would recommend the Owens Thomas House and Slave Quarters, or the Mercer House. Savannah also has some absolutely stunning religious buildings. Join a tour of the Mickve Israel synagogue or wander the Cathedral Basilica of St John the Baptist, which are both really beautiful churches with interesting histories.

Of course, no visit to Savannah would be complete without stopping by the famous Forsyth Park, whose main feature is a large fountain with tree-lined paths almost making a canopy leading up to it. And you must wander some of the 22 squares of Savannah, which were designed in a very symmetrical pattern throughout the city. Chippewa and Lafayette squares are favorites!

February is a great time to visit Savannah – it’s usually mild weather, the flowers are starting to bloom, and you avoid the oppressive heat and humidity of summer!

10. Chicago, Illinois

If you want to beat the crowds and enjoy the city, Chicago is the perfect place to spend February in the USA.

If you want to beat the crowds and enjoy the city, Chicago is the perfect place to spend February in the USA.

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Getting There: Chicago O’Hare International Airport is one of the main hubs for air traffic in the country. This makes getting to the city incredibly easy.

Looking for one of the best places to spend February in the USA? If so then be sure to spend at least 2 days in Chicago, Illinois.

Just be prepared for the cold since daily highs are around 35 F while daily lows are around 23 F. Also, because Chicago sits on Lake Michigan, lakeside winds regularly whip through the area – making it feel a lot colder than it already is. Yeah. they don’t call it the windy city for nothing.

But, if you bundle up and can handle the cold, then you’ll love the reduced prices and crowds that February brings. It’s also a great time to go ice skating in front of the famous bean at McCormick Tribune Ice Rink.

You can also try your hand at curling at the Harry Caray’s Tavern at Navy Pier or enjoy a meal and drink inside a whimsical igloo at Kennedy Rooftop. But, if you want to get away from the cold, then warm up inside one of Chicago’s incredible museums, like the Art Institute of Chicago or the Field Museum natural history museum.

You can also take in sweeping panoramas of the city from atop the 360 Chicago Observation before grabbing some authentic deep dish pizza at the iconic Lou Malnati’s Pizza.

As you can see, there are loads of things to do in Chicago. It is perfect for both solo travelers and families.

11. Las Vegas, Nevada

If you want to be part of the excitement, Las Vegas is the perfect place to spend February in the USA.

If you want to be part of the excitement, Las Vegas is the perfect place to spend February in the USA.

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

Getting There: The local airport is Las Vegas McCarren airport. There are taxi and shuttle services that go into town, or car rentals are available as well.

Where to Stay: Staying at the heart of the Las Vegas strip is ideal. Get a hotel as close to the strip as possible to be near the city lights and action. A nice alternative to the strip is Fremont Street, which has more of a laid back feel.

Las Vegas, Nevada, is the city that never sleeps. From hit concerts and performances, to water shows and casinos, this city has it all. It is recommended to stay 2-3 nights in Las Vegas to get a good taste of the city. Since Las Vegas is located in the Nevada desert, the summer temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit on average. This city is best enjoyed during the cooler, winter months, with February being the perfect choice.

Night time in Las Vegas brings out the beautiful city lights. While most of the night on the strip is spent indoors where it’s warm, the time spent outdoors going between shows, restaurants, and casinos will be chilly, so be sure to bring a warm coat.

The ideal trip to Las Vegas includes catching a show or play, having a nice dinner at an award winning restaurant, and catching some of the Las Vegas strip classics like watching the water show at the Bellagio fountains that happen every half an hour.

Daytime in Las Vegas in February is unique, because the temperatures are cool enough to go out and explore the city. While summer days in Las Vegas are mostly spent by the pool or in a casino, winter days in Las Vegas can be spent outdoors enjoying some of the city’s other attractions like the Neon Sign Museum, the Mob Museum, or the various outdoor shops along the strip.

12. Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

The Columbia River Gorge is a perfect place in Oregon to spend February in the USA.

The Columbia River Gorge is a perfect place in Oregon to spend February in the USA.

Location: Columbia River Gorge, Oregon/Washington

Getting there: The closest airport is Portland International Airport, which is about 20 minutes away from the start of the Gorge.

Where to stay: The Hotel Zags is a boutique hotel in downtown Portland, perfect for a stay near the Columbia River Gorge. Or further down the river, the Hood River Hotel is an adorable hotel to book.

The Columbia River Gorge is one of the best places to visit in Oregon that’s close to Portland and is accessible almost year-round. Even when everywhere else in the state is covered in snow, the area around the Gorge is snow-free and accessible to visitors. The Columbia River cuts through a rocky cliffside for 80 miles before flowing into the Pacific Ocean.

There are fantastic things to do on either side of the river, in both Washington and Oregon, although there tends to be more to do in Oregon during February. With over 90 waterfalls on just the Oregon side of the river, you’re bound to find some of the most beautiful views in the state.

Explore some of the falls that are directly off of the road such as Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon. Or, hike a bit further and explore some of the lesser-known ones such as Tunnel Falls.

Aside from the waterfalls, other hikes such as Angels Rest are beautiful any time of year, giving the perfect vantage point over the Columbia River. The Vista House is the perfect spot to drive to and admire the views from over 700 feet above the river.

On the Washington side of the river, Spirit Falls and Beacon Rock are beautiful hikes that are loved by locals and visitors alike.

13. Zion National Park, Utah

If you want to head to a national park to spend February in the USA think about Zion!

If you want to head to a national park to spend February in the USA think about Zion!

Location: Zion National Park, Utah

Getting There: If flying to Zion National Park you can arrive at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and drive 2.5 miles, or fly into Salt Lake City and connect to either Cedar City or Saint George airport and only drive 49-60 miles. From Vegas you will need to drive on the 15 north to State Route 9. Driving from Salt Lake City or Cedar City, Utah, you’ll need to take the 15 south to State Route 17 to State Route 9.

Where To Stay: There is only one place to stay within Zion National Park unless you are camping at one of their 3 campgrounds. The Zion Lodge is located on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive and offers all park guests a gift shop and restaurant.

Just 7 miles from Zion’s east entrance is Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort where you will find a variety of lodging options. They offer cabins, vacation homes, RV sites, tent campgrounds, glamping, and a canvas covered wagon.

The entrance fee to Zion National Park is around $35, or you can use your National Park Annual Pass. From April-November it is Zion’s busy season. This means more people and you can’t drive through the main canyon, you have to take the free Zion National Park Shuttle.

If you’ll be visiting on a weekend in February, the shuttle will be operating. Just be sure to get there 30-45 minutes before the shuttle opens if you don’t want to wait in a long line.

The weather will be chilly, but if you wear layers and are ready for some snow, then you’ll be comfortable. Pick a trail like Angels Landing that challenges your fear of heights, or if you’re hiking with kids then stroll along the Riverside Walk leading up to the Narrows.

Canyon Overlook Trail is perfect for an easy birds eye view while the Pa’Rus Trail is a paved trail along the river looking up at the sandstone cliffs which is great for strollers, bikes, and wheelchairs.

The Emerald Pools Trail starts out easy going to the lower pool, then increases to moderate difficulty as you keep going to the upper pool.

Be sure to check out adventure packages such as horseback riding, jeep tours, and canyoneering from Ponderosa Ranch Resort while you’re in Zion for some extra adventure added to your trip.

14. Arches National Park, Utah

Arches National Park is one of the popular favourites to spend February in the USA.

Arches National Park is one of the popular favourites to spend February in the USA.

Location: Arches National Park, Utah

Getting There: The best way to get to Arches National park is to fly into Salt lake city and rent a car from there. It is about a four hour drive from the airport.

Arches National Park is easily one of the best places to visit in February in the USA. Located within the deserts of Southeastern Utah, Arches National Park sits just north of Moab and is home to a wealth of stunning natural arches that are well worth a visit.

And February is a perfect time to stop by since many of the best trails in the park remain open all year long. Plus, at this time of year, the cold keeps many visitors away. So, you’ll probably have the place all to yourself as you explore iconic locations like Delicate Arch and Devil’s Garden.

Also, because of reduced light pollution from guests, you’ll be able to do some incredible stargazing at Balanced Rock Picnic Area, Panorama Point, The Windows, and the Garden of Eden Viewpoint.

That being said, snow regularly falls in Arches National Park in February since daily highs are around 50 F while daily lows are around  the mid 20s F.

So, be on the lookout for trail markers that can be obscured by snow and watch out for slippery terrain. Also, pack plenty of water and slather on the sunscreen since this park sits at 5,653 feet above sea level.

15. Seattle, Washington

Seattle is a great big city to spend February in the USA.

Seattle is a great big city to spend February in the USA.

Location: Seattle, Washington

Getting There: Seattle is a city that is extremely easy to get to since it’s home to the large international Seatac airport. Thus, almost anyone can fly into Seattle and just as quickly hop into a rideshare and get dropped off downtown Seattle. They can also take the super simple link light rail that glides through various parts of Seattle directly from the airport.

Where To Stay: Where you would like to stay is going to be sharply shaped by what type of activities you would like to partake in while visiting Seattle in February. The weather is definitely on the colder side, and it rains often; thus, you’ll want to have your stay located very close to your activities and have transportation planned out.

For example, if visiting the city and shopping is what you’ll be doing, you’ll want to stay at a centrally located hotel such as the Grand Hyatt, a few blocks from the famous Pikes Market and shopping area in Westlake. On the other hand, if eating great food and enjoying nightlife is your style, you’ll want to stay near Capitol Hill. The Hilton Garden Inn is close enough to Capitol Hill and is located a few blocks from the Westlake shopping area and link station.

February in Seattle is absolutely a lovely time to visit, albeit a little chilly due to the winter season being wet and cold. However, don’t let the cold stop you from exploring the infamous emerald city because Seattle is famous for its delicious food, social life, and adventure.

If trying great food and drinks is on the top of your itinerary, then make sure to visit the Pike Market area for fresh seafood and dazzling drinks at the nearby bars. You can also sneak a peek at the original Beecher’s location and try amazing fresh cheeses, and then hop on over to the OG Starbucks and grab a nice piping hot latte to warm up with.

For those who love adventure and being outdoors, you can also drive out to the various hiking trails around Seattle that work for newbies and experts. Then, after a long day of hiking, head back to the city and visit West Seattle to grab some generous portions of Italian food at Talarico’s Pizza and then take a walk across Alki beach.

All in all, Seattle is a great place to visit during February in the USA because most of its well-known attractions are still just as wonderful in the winter.
