One of the first cities that we stayed in when we visited the Netherlands was the Hague or Den Haag. It should not come as a surprise that we traveled quite often from Amsterdam to the Hague. There are different modes of transport that you can take but the easiest and cheapest way is to take the train from Amsterdam to the Hague.
I will take you through the entire route by all the modes that I know. Hopefully this will make your trip easier.
Note: Den Haag is one of the best weekend trips from Amsterdam. You can even head here on a day trip if you are here for a short on time or if you spend a week in Amsterdam.

The Dutch Public Transport System
The best thing about the Netherlands is the Dutch public transport system. It connects most of the country pretty effectively. It uses a combination of trains (NS and Arriva), Intercity trains, buses and trams. This means that all the cities in the country are pretty much connected. Getting to the countryside can be a bit challenging but not entirely impossible.
Luckily for us both Den Haag and Amsterdam are major cities. This means that they are well connected by the public transport system.
The OV Chipkaart
This is a contactless card that is used to pay for all the public transport systems in the Netherlands. All you have to do is tap in and tap out. The money automatically gets deducted from it. You do have to buy the OV Chipkaart in advance though. There are two types of OV chipkaart.
Non personalized – You need to load money on this card. It is not personalized. You can load money on it from any ticket counter or from the ticket kiosk that you can operate yourself. These are usually located outside any railway station.
Personalized – These cards are issued to residents. They are personalized and come with your photograph and name on it. The cards are linked to your account and money gets deducted from it. The best part about it is you can apply for discounts on travel.
Distance And Time Taken From Amsterdam To The Hague
Amsterdam is only 65 kms away from the Hague. It takes roughly 48 min to reach the city via car and 45 min by train. It is an easy journey to make by all accounts. Especially by train since the compartments are pretty comfortable.
Amsterdam To The Hague Train Cost
The price of the ticket is dependent on the time of the day that you travel at. Buying your ticket in advance makes it cheaper. Traveling in off peak hours is also cheaper. The ticket prices start at 16 euros per head.
If you don’t have an OV Chipkaart, you can get a ticket from the ticketing counter. This is especially important if you are a tourist and are catching a train from Amsterdam airport to the Hague.
How To Get From Amsterdam To The Hague By Train
There are two main train stations in Amsterdam that people usually use to get to the Hague: Amsterdam Centraal and Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol).
Amsterdam Airport To The Hague (From Schiphol)
The Amsterdam Airport is known as Schiphol. I’m just including this fact for people who are new to the area and do not know this. The Amsterdam airport has a train station that is pretty big and it connects most of the large cities in the country. If you’ve been following us, you will remember that we talked about going from Amsterdam to Groningen from this station.
Having a station right in the airport makes it super convenient for frequent flyers like us. The station is also connected to the Den Haag Centraal station. So you don’t need to lug your bags far or take any other transport to head to the city.
Tickets From Amsterdam Airport To The Hague: These can be obtained from the ticket counter. There is always someone at the counter so if you have any questions you can ask them here. We found them really helpful!
If you have an OV chipkaart then just tap in when you enter.
Tips For Catching The Train From Amsterdam Airport To The Hague
I would recommend standing in the airport waiting area till it is closer to your train time. This is because it can get pretty cold at the train station waiting area. Don’t put it off too long especially if there are crowds because you want to catch a seat. We just bundled up and went despite the cold. Stood at the platform for about 10 minutes but it wasn’t too bad.
Amsterdam Centraal Station To The Hague
Another great way to get from Amsterdam to the Hague is via Amsterdam Centraal Station. This is the main train station in Amsterdam and is the best way to commute if you are in the city. Getting to the Hague from here is pretty much the same as Schiphol. Buy a ticket at the ticket counter or tap in with an OV chipkaart.
At The Den Haag Centraal Station
You will know when you reach the Den Haag Centraal Station because it is announced on the train. In the event that there are no announcements or you don’t understand the Dutch announcement, refer to the screen in each compartment. I sometimes even download an offline map and use GPS when I’m nervous about missing a station.
Make sure to tap out when you reach the station. That way your trip is completed on the OV chipkaart.
Amsterdam To The Hague By Car
You can also choose to drive from Amsterdam to the Hague if you have your own car. Otherwise you would have to rent one. This would make sense if you are traveling and this is the start of your trip. If you just want to get from point A to B then the train makes better sense.
Alternatively you can get a private car transfer which also works especially if you are heading in from Amsterdam Schiphol airport and have had a long flight. Just book it online so you don’t have to wait too long. Its so much easier that way.
