The USA is one huge country and with 50 states there is always a ton of things to explore. The problem however is always about where to go next? Which one is a perfect fit with the weather? And are there enough things to do in the area to occupy your time!
Since I struggle with nailing down a destination, I always look at everything based on the month or on the season I’m traveling. This helps me find a place that is great where the weather is concerned and preferably in the shoulder season so I don’t catch too many tourists.
That’s why I have been working on a series on exploring the country by month. This post talks about all the different places to spend June in the USA. The places come highly recommended by experts, locals and travel bloggers. We even have some expert tips on where to stay and what to do when you get there.
Don’t forget to check out our other posts about USA and the best places to visit in each month. I’m linking to them below to help you find them easily.

2. Cannon beach, Oregon
Epic beaches and dramatic cliffs make Cannon Beach the perfect place to spend June in the USA.
Location: Cannon Beach, Oregon
Getting there: Cannon Beach is located just an hour and a half northwest of Portland, Oregon.
Where to stay: If you’re looking for epic views of the beach, consider a stay at the Hallmark Resort and Spa, which overlooks the town’s famed Haystack Rock and has fun perks, like warm cookies at check-in.
Cannon Beach is a charming town, with stunning sea stacks and dramatic cliffs, located along the Oregon Coast. The town is known for its iconic rock monolith, Haystack Rock, which towers 235 feet out of the Pacific Ocean.
While there’s tons of things to do in Cannon Beach, many of them involve going to and exploring the beach itself. For example, schedule your visit during low tide to see tiny fish, sea stars and anemones in the tide pools surrounding Haystack Rock. You can even book a tour of the coast including both Cannon beach and Haystack rock online!
In June, puffins, affectionately called the “Clowns of the Sea”, actually reside on Haystack Rock’s craggy north face, which you can observe from the beach’s shores. After a day at the beach, consider watching sunset while having a beach campfire- there’s something so magical about being warmed by the fire as the cool ocean breeze whips against your face. Sounds like a great way to spend June in the USA doesn’t it?
Beyond the eponymous beach, the area has some amazing hiking trails, like in Ecola or Oswald West State Parks. For example, the Elk Flats trail will take you down unto the shores of Short Sands Beach, which is one of the best places in Oregon to watch surfers catch some sick (and cold!) waves. Alternatively, Crescent Beach is an excellent trail, where you can hike through a lush coastal forest to a stunning beach, which you’re likely to have all to yourself!

During the summer, the canyon is blanketed with lush green vegetation, making it one of the prettiest times of the year to visit, as well as one of the best places to spend June in the USA.
The most popular attraction in the entire park is the pair of waterfalls located deep inside the heart of the canyon. The first of the two falls is often regarded as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the entire state. This is due to the shockingly vibrant turquoise pool that forms at the bottom of the 60-foot falls.
Whether this waterfall appears as a gentle trickle or a powerful flow is determined by the time of year that you visit. During June in the USA, the falls typically have a larger volume, so it is a popular time to visit for this reason.
To see the bluest water, however, it is best that you try to avoid visiting right after it has rained. Otherwise, the pretty blue pool might end up looking brown and muddy instead of the gemstone color that it’s famous for.
When you get hungry, head to the Canyon Grill for one of the tastiest dinners in Rising Fawn. They serve a variety of different types of food, so it’s easy to find something that everyone will like. Lookout Mountain Pizza Company is also located just down the road, and they serve the best pizza in town!

The island also has a few historical sites, including Inscription Rock and the Glacial Grooves State Memorial. The grooves were created by a massive glacier over 18,000 years ago and are the largest of their kind in the world.
You have to stop in Meg’s Makeshop for handmade, island-inspired gifts and decor. For a quick lunch, grab a pizza or sandwich from The Caddy Shack and enjoy live music. For a nicer dining experience, The Island House has several unique dishes.
To finish your night, you won’t want to miss the sunset at West Bay Inn. Grab some drinks and sit at the tiki bar to experience some unforgettable views. June in the USA can’t get better than this!

19. Craters Of The Moon National Monument And Preserve, Idaho
The Craters of the Moon is an intriguing spot to spend June in the USA.
Location: Craters Of The Moon National Monument And Preserve, Idaho
Getting There: Craters of the Moon is located off US-26 in south-central Idaho approximately 2 hrs from Boise and 90 minutes from Idaho Falls.
Where To Stay: Lodging around Craters of the moon is Limited with one first-come first-serve campsite craters of the moon and several hotel options in nearby Arco Idaho (20 miles). Arco (known as being the first city illuminated by Nuclear Power) is also the best option for restaurants, groceries, and gas near the National Monument.
As one of the most unique NPS sites, Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Idaho is one of the most incredible places with generally few tourists.
The site protects an area of Idaho that was very volcanically active and has remnants of volcanoes and old volcanic eruptions. Visitors can explore several volcano types such as splatter cones and cinder cones as well as wander through “wild caves” of old lava tubes.
The caves are considered wild and you do have pretty free reign to explore (although space inside is very limited) and entry requires a free permit. Visitors must attest to never wearing any clothing or items in any cave system in North America (to protect the bats from white nose syndrome which has not reached the park).
The site is open year-round and gets snow in the winter (with cross-country skiing) and hot weather in the summer. June is the perfect month to visit with great weather, generally low crowds, and between the cold and heat. Late June is also when plants such as wildflowers begin to bloom feeding off the winter snow melt.
There’s a lot to see at Craters of the Moon across the 753,000 acres of the park However, only a small portion of the park is connected by road near the Visitor Center. Much of the rest of the park is considered wilderness, which requires planning, permitting, and bringing lots of water (which is difficult to find in the park).
