Le Château De Vêves is known by a number of different names. I think this is largely because the name gets translated into so many different languages. The Castle of Celles, Le Château De Vêves, Vêves castle or Kasteel van Vêves all refer to the same location. So don’t get confused.
No matter what you call it, the Vêves castle will be one of those places that you will instantly fall in love with. It is also one of the most kid friendly castles that we have visited in Europe! I’ll tell you why in just a bit so make sure you keep reading!

Le Château De Vêves is located in Wallonia in the province of Namur. It is just a short drive out of Namur city and a very scenic trip at that. We actually stayed in the countryside and made our way here.
You can also visit the castle from Dinant which is just a 10 minute drive away. I recommend combining the two locations so that you make the most of the trip.

Best Time To Visit Le Château De Vêves
Honestly there is no such thing as the best time to visit the Castle of Vêves. There isn’t much to see outside the castle other than its magnificent facade. There is a lot to see indoors so it is a great trip from when the weather isn’t particularly good.
We visited on a long weekend and did not really find the Castle of Vêves crowded. This is probably because most of the tourists head to the more popular cities like Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp etc. We visited Brussels the next day and the crowds were insane!
Why Is Castle Of Vêves Such A Great Place For Kids?
As you can see the rooms are cordoned off so the kids can’t break anything in the Castle Of Vêves.
Before we start talking about the castle itself, I really have to mention how kid friendly the Castle of Vêves was. Every child gets a costume. Girls get to dress up as princesses and boys get knight costumes. I think you can swap around because my kids wanted to have swords with their princess dresses and that was ok.
You don’t even have to pay extra for it as it is included in the price of the ticket. They even get a crown to put atop their heads.
The inside of the Castle of Vêves even has little step stools in places so that the children can get a better view.
Le Château De Vêves
The Castle Of Vêves castle chapel.
Le Château De Vêves dates way back to the 670. The castle was destroyed in 1200 and was then rebuilt in 1230. The foundations that it is on, still dates back to when it was originally constructed which I must say is fascinating!
The building stood tall for another 300 or so years before it was burned down in the 15th century and then restored once more. The castle was then renovated during the Renaissance.
Today, the Castle of Vêves stands tall and is very well maintained. Located at the top of a hill, it has an amazing vantage point.
What Can You See In The Castle Of Vêves
The Castle of Vêves is one of the best places to actually walk through Medieval architecture. The castle is still decorated in the same style so you can see what the rooms looked like back then.
From staircases, dining halls and bedrooms to photographs, miniatures, paintings and more, the Castle of Vêves has it all.
I particularly liked the old kitchens. The children had a lot of fun and we had a lot of laughs as we tried to explain how the old stoves worked. Other rooms that we loved were the dining room and the castle chapel.
The route through the castle is simple enough. You start out at the base and wander through the rooms of the castle till you exit via the souvenir shop which is right at the side of the ticket counter. The children then deposit their costumes here before leaving.
There you have it! The Castle of Vêves is one of the most beautiful castles in Belgium that I have visited. Located in the countryside, it isn’t very crowded and is an amazing place to take children to.
To be honest I could have done with a princess or knight costume too. It’s a shame the adults don’t get to have the same kind of fun.

The castle sounds so much fun! Especially with the costumes for the kids - but what a pity that they didn't offer one for the grown-ups, haha!! Thank you for sharing!
