May in Europe is amazing. Spring is in the air. The temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold and almost every destination has something to offer. A big bonus is that the summer crowds haven’t made their way into Europe yet. You could still get off visiting some of the more popular places without the crowds which is PERFECT!
From Tromso in Norway to Faro in Portugal, we’ve found some really intriguing places to spend May in Europe. Most of these have been suggested by locals, travel experts and travel bloggers. This means that each suggestion is accompanied by some really good inside tips.

1. Berat, Albania
Berat is a great offbeat place to spend May in Europe.

Getting There: Berat is easy to reach by bus or taxi from Tirana (Albania’s capital city and location of the county’s main international airport), or the ports of Vlore and Durres.
Where To Stay: Set in an Ottoman-era house in the Old Town, the 4-star Hotel Onufri offers beautiful suites with heritage detailing and river views.
Located in the heart of south-central Albania, the historic city of Berat is ideal for a spring getaway in the Balkans. May is one of the best months to visit this part of Albania: The weather is temperate, special outdoor activities are available, and it is far less crowded compared to summer high season.
Known for its preserved Ottoman architecture, Berat has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Its nickname the ‘city of a thousand windows’ comes from the alabaster-and-stone mansion houses that line both sides of the valley.
Berat is divided into two neighborhoods by the Osumi River. To the south, Mangalem was traditionally the Muslim district while Gorica to the north was the Christian quarter. Today, the two are united – but it’s easy to spot subtle differences in the architecture and planning as you wander the charming streets.
Kalaja Castle, built in the 13th century and dotted with interesting ruins, is the number one thing to see in Berat. Inside the castle’s biggest church, the Onufri Museum displays a coveted collection of 16th-century religious icons, iconostasis and paintings.
Spring is a great time to explore the landscape beyond Berat, with water levels at the nearby Bogova Waterfall at their highest.
This spectacular cascade is located on the Osumi River Canyon, which reaches 100 metres high in some places. Follow easy trails along the canyon for spectacular views, or try your hand at whitewater rafting.

2. Istria, Croatia

Getting There: the best way to reach Istria, besides driving, is by bus. There are direct connections from numerous places in Croatia as well as from Slovenia and Italy.
Where To Stay: Rovinj is a great place to use as a base for Istria. There are plenty of accommodation options to choose from, both private apartments and hotels, such as Hotel Casa Garzotto.
Istria Peninsula, located in the very northwest of Croatia, right on the border with Slovenia, is one of the best places to spend May in Europe. Not only is the weather already good (you can even go swimming in the Adriatic Sea) but there are not that many people around which would let you enjoy the region to the fullest.
While tourists often choose more popular destinations in Croatia, Istria is a bit in the shadow, offering plenty of things to do and see!
The region’s main tourist attraction is Pula, the city of almost 60.000 inhabitants known especially for its ancient remnants.
This is where you will find Pula Arena – one of the largest and best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world and the most impressive ancient monument in Croatia, dating back to B.C. times. And that’s only one of many great things to do in Pula.
Another interesting place to visit (that you can also use as your base for exploring Istria) is Rovinj – a charming, picturesque town, perfect for wandering around and soaking up its laid-back atmosphere.
Be sure to wander a bit away from the coast too and visit medieval hilltop towns, like Motovun, that are the quintessence of the region. Istria is known for truffles so be sure to try this delicacy, preferably in one of the seaside restaurants.
You might even go truffle hunting here! If you decide to visit Istria, you are definitely in for a treat!

Split’s main tourist attraction is the Diocletian’s palace, a Roman fortress that dates back to the 4th century. This well-preserved monument makes up most of the enchanting Old Town and houses the Temple of Jupiter, the Saint Domnius Cathedral, the Ethnographic Museum and many other interesting sites.
Other places to visit include leafy Marjan Hill, the ever-bustling Riva promenade and some gorgeous city beaches. Krka National Park and the Klis Fortress are some of the most popular day trips.
Its bustling ferry port makes Split an excellent travel base to explore the Dalmatian islands. Set sail to Hvar, Brač and the Blue Lagoon for an epic island-hopping adventure.
The weather in May is very pleasant. With daily highs hovering around 22ºC, it’s warm enough to relax on the beach and mild enough to go hiking or sailing. This makes it one of the best places to spend May in Europe. Just be sure to pack a jacket to wear on cooler evenings.

Getting There: Ios is served by a port but doesn’t have an airport. The closest airport is Santorini (Thira) International Airport (JTR).
From here, hop on a short ferry ride to get to Ios. But most travelers arrive by way of Athens, since the capital’s airport, Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) receives a lot of international flights year round. The ferry ride is much longer though (about 5 hours on the high-speed ferry).
Where To Stay: Galini Pension is a budget-friendly option really close to the port. For a more exclusive experience, right near Mylopotas Beach, consider Far Out Beach Club Resort & Camping, complete with a swimming pool, beach bar, and more.
Ios is a really small island, ideal for those who enjoy being active. During the peak summer months (July & August), however, it turns into a party hub – so depending on your preferences, you may want to visit it from late May to mid-June or from September to mid-October.
While you can easily spend just a weekend here, 5 days on the Island of Ios will allow you to really soak up the island lifestyle and its uniqueness.
There are two major archeological sites to check out on the island: the bronze settlement of Skarkos and the Venetian fortress of Paleokastro. You can either visit them as part of an Ios island tour, or on your own. Renting a scooter is a great idea if you prefer the independent way.
The archeological museum will shed some light on the island’s history and relationship with Santorini, as well as reveal more details about Skarkos. After you visit the museum, check out Chora, the main settlement. Allow yourself to be “lost” on the narrow alleyways and discover souvenir shops, tavernas, and more.
And while Ios might not be as popular for sunsets as Santorini, they are magical. Head to the Gaitis Museum and watch the sunset from there. Another lovely place is the church in the port.
No trip to Ios is complete with checking out some of its beaches. Mylopotas Beach is the most touristy, offering a lot of facilities and things to do. You can play beach volleyball, swim, try Stand-up-paddling (SUP), snorkel, and more.
Klima Beach, a short hike from Mylopotas, is an excellent place for a romantic picnic and a dip in the sea, if you wish. And speaking of a picnic, depending on your dietary restrictions, you might want to try the local cheese called Xino. Alonistra Tavern on Psathi beach is a great choice to indulge in the local specialties.
With so many interesting things to do, Ios makes one great location for May in Europe.

Where To Stay: For a vacation on Mykonos you will find an almost overwhelming number of good accommodations. Most are chic small hotels that inspire with mega beautiful design and often with pool. A wonderful destination for Europe in May is definitely Mykonos in Greece. The island is part of the Cyclades and a must for any trip to Greece.

Prague belongs to the prettiest cities in the world. In spring, when cherry trees blossom and Prague’s parks are waking up from their winter dreams, even more so.
Of course, even in spring you should do the usual sightseeing, especially if it’s your first time to the Czech capital. Stroll through the Old Town, marvel at the Old Town Square with its Astronomical clock, and walk along the ancient Charles Bridge to Prague Castle.
Additionally, if you’re after the perfect blossoming cherry trees, you can pay a visit to the Vinohrady district (especially the Šafaříkova Street) and/or the Troja chateau gardens just across from the Prague Zoo.
Prague’s parks are wonderful too and offer beautiful views. For those, go to Riegrovy Sady park, which offers a view of Prague Castle, and to Letná park for views of the city and Vltava River. Letná is also a great sunset spot.
Czechs enjoy a public holiday on May 1 and May 8. Prague residents, who choose to stay in the city, then frequent many of the events that lay dormant throughout winter.
There are food festivals, music events… basically anything that could tickle one’s fancy. On May Day, you may witness couples kissing under a blossoming cherry tree – it’s a Czech tradition. Getting There: The best way to get to Faro from Europe is to fly to its international Airport (FAO). Flights from the USA and further afield will usually connect in Lisbon. Another route if traveling from Spain, is getting a direct coach from Seville.

Getting There: The easiest way to get to Tromsø is to fly into Tromsø’s airport. Most international visitors will need to change in Oslo along the way. You can also get a train from Stockholm or Oslo to Narvik and then take a bus from Narvik to Oslo though this is a much longer journey.
Where To Stay: There are a lot of options when it comes to where to stay in Tromsø, with many recognisable hotel brands. One of the best is Radisson Blu which is right in the harbour and has beautiful views out towards the mountains and the sea.
Tromsø is the largest city in Northern Norway and sits within the Arctic Circle. While Tromsø in winter means short days where the sun doesn’t officially rise, May in Tromsø is when the midnight-sun season starts and the sun never sets!
In Tromsø, the midnight-sun season starts around May 17th which is also a Norwegian National holiday: Constitution Day! On this day you’ll find many Norwegians wearing traditional clothing: the bunad.
Whatever you decide to wear, you should make sure it’s something special to celebrate the importance of this day and join in with the party atmosphere. The party atmosphere in Tromøo is doubled since it’s the same day as the start of the Midnight-sun season!
For the rest of May, you can enjoy many of the outdoor adventures and things to do in Tromsø. Though many of the higher mountains near Tromsø may still have snow towards the summit, the longer days mean you can have a full day of adventure from hiking to the top of the Fjellheisan via the Sherpasteps, to kayaking the fjords and islands.
You can even still go skiing in May! Joining a backcountry ski tour of the local mountains is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Tromsø in May.
If outdoor adventures aren’t your thing, take the opportunity to visit one of the city’s many museums, visit the Tromsøbadet which has a beautiful panoramic view from its outdoors heated swimming pool as well as a sauna area, or simply enjoy delicious sampling cinnamon buns from the many cafes in the city.

Belgrade is a wonderful place to visit in May! Temperatures are pleasant, the flowers are in bloom and there is a really vibrant atmosphere in the air as the city begins to come to life ready for summer after the cold winter months. During May you’ll find the floating clubs that Belgrade is famous for start to open for the summer, plus there aren’t many tourists yet so you can enjoy the city without the crowds!
Even if you only have 24 hours in Belgrade there are plenty of things to do – from visiting the impressive St Sava Cathedral – the Balkan’s largest Orthodox Cathedral, to the stunning Old Palace and New Palace (Stari Dvor and Novi Dvor) and Republic Square.
Knez Mihailova is Belgrade’s main pedestrianised street. It runs through the heart of the Old Town and there are many restaurants and coffee shops with outdoor areas where you can go for lunch or a coffee.
Head to the symbol of Belgrade – the historic Belgrade Fortress to watch the sunset. The Fortress is over 2000 years old and is a must-visit on your visit to Belgrade.
Once the sun has gone down, check out Belgrade’s bohemian neighbourhood ‘Skadarlija’ for dinner and drinks, it has an incredible atmosphere. Or if you want to see how the Serbs party, head to the splavovi (permanently moored boats that are floating nightclubs and bars) to experience Belgrade’s wild nightlife!

14. Stuttgart, Germany
An epic place to spend May in Europe is Stuttgart.
Location: Located in southern Germany, perfectly located two hours from the borders of France, Switzerland and Austria, Stuttgart is a fantastic May destination.
Getting There: Serviced by a small airport, direct flights to Stuttgart are available from many European destinations.
Stuttgart is known, alongside Munich, for its beer festival in the fall. However, its second most popular festival, Frühlingsfest, is a spring festival, located on the same fairgrounds as the fall beer festival, with many similar events and activities during the spring festival.
Frühlingsfest usually occurs at the end of April into May and is attended by approximately 1.5 million people. The fairgrounds are fairly large and many festival rides and activities occur, making it a family-friendly festival while also balancing the festival for solo travelers with its beer test and numerous vendors with artisan crafts and goods available for sale.
Stuttgart is also home to Europe’s largest zoo/botanical garden, Wilhelma Zoo. It is one of the city’s main attractions and is spread over hills close to the city’s fairgrounds. May is part of shoulder season, allowing for fewer visitors but decent weather for late spring/early summer. The zoo has beautiful flowering trees that tend to bloom in May, making for exquisite photos.
The city is also home to Mercedes Benz museum as its headquarters are located in Stuttgart. It’s a go-to city for car enthusiasts as factory tours are available for visitors. During the low season, it is easier to maneuver around the museum and schedule tours.
Finally, May is a great time to visit local castles, such as Hohenzollern Castle, 45 minutes south of the city, or Ludwigsburg Castle, a beautiful replica of Versailles located just 30 minutes north of the city.
