Mullerthal trail was not a trail that we had heard about when we set out planning our three week road trip through Europe. We did know that our route passed through Luxembourg and we wanted to stop in the country for the day. The
Hiking in Luxembourg was high on our bucket list but with two toddlers we were worried we would not make it out of the city. Mind you, we did not even have a kid carrier backpack when we visited.
The Mullerthal trail popped up on our radar. It is a cool trail that takes you through the natural, luxuriously green part of Luxembourg. I know exactly what you are thinking. The MULLERTHAL TRAIL! Yeah sure but hear me out. We did not do the whole trail. Heck, I think what we did was about 1/10th of it and ultra easy.
It is a great way to see the area when you have constraints like we did. Plus you get to chill and dip your legs in the ice cold water if you want to. We even had a mini picnic by the stream.

Find The Right Parking
As you can see, there is ample parking at this part of the Mullerthal trail!
First off, you need to find the right parking spot. Most people catch sight of the iconic bridge and then feel that they have overshot the area by the time they reach the parking lot. So do yourself a favor and mark the Schiessentümpel parking on your map. The parking lot is conveniently located for the short 1.2 kilometer trail that I will take you on.
Trap / Stairway Mëllerdall
The Trap / Stairway Mëllerdall
Our first stop was the Trap / Stairway Mëllerdall. This part of the Mullerthal trail is so easy to reach. All that you have to do is cross the road from the parking lot and head out on the path.
The first part of the trail is a bridge that crosses over to the otherside of the stream. You can get a lovely view from up here.
It is cool and has plenty of shade which makes it a great place to catch a great view. Head on further and the path is a slight incline. Nothing too strenous. My two year old walked the entire way. That should give you an idea of just what it was like.
The path was pretty busy since it was a short walk and it gave everyone a chance to explore the Mullerthal trail. The Mullerthal trail that we went on was super accessible which is also another reason why it was probably popular.
Why Is The Trap / Stairway Mëllerdall So Iconic?
Trap / Stairway Mëllerdall is an example of regionalism. Wondering what that means? Well the stairway was built using wood that came from the same forest. Infact, this Stairway Mëllerdall was constructed by wood harvested in a 20 kilometer radius.
The stairway also almost appears to float in the area. It is not entirely a unique construction but it is one that makes for an easy trail and some really cool views.
The Stairway Mëllerdall then leads downwards to the stream below. You can even dip your toes in the cool water. There are a couple of cool places where you can take some amazing pics on the way. We chose to sit on the top of one of the huge rocks and have a picnic lunch. The kids loved it and so did we.
Its one of those trails that is great if you are in Luxembourg city with kids and want to do something a little bit different.
Schiessentümpel / Schéissendëmpel Waterfall
Schéissendëmpel Waterfall is the most crowded part of the trail!
Schiessentümpel/ Schéissendëmpel Waterfall was the second iconic point on our short route along the Mullerthal trail. This is probably the most crowded and photographes part of the trail. I’m not kidding. While our short walk was relatively quiet, this part of the Mullerthal trail was bustling with people.
In fact, there was a point where we were two people walking side by side. That was pretty interesting to say the least because there were loads of people and dogs on the trail. The dogs obviously jumped right into the water and then proceeded to drench everyone around. It was a warm day so no one had an issue.
What Is Special About Schiessentümpel/ Schéissendëmpel Waterfall?
Schiessentümpel/ Schéissendëmpel Waterfall is triple segmented waterfall. One of the iconic spots here is the stone bridge that is built here. This was constructed without using any mortar way back in 1881. The stone bridge is still standing. There were a number of carved animals on it back then. Only two of them still exist.
Getting Back To The Mullerthal Trail Parking
There are two ways in which you can head back to the parking. Either circle back via the main road. It has a lovely paved path which gives you a high vantage over the path that you walked. The other way is to head back the way that you came.
Both routes are scenic. The former however is the easiest and fastest way to get to your car.
And there you have it. If you are traveling with kids and aren’t pro hikers but still want to try out one of the cool trails in Luxembourg, you will find that this short route is great for both you and the kids. It is also a great way to introduce the kids to hiking.
