Navigating Through The Guide To Places To Spend October In Asia

One thing that I can say with certainty is that October in Asia turned out to be a rather hot topic. I had never realized that it was such a popular month to travel in. My inbox was flooded with suggestions and as you can expect, this list has turned out to be mighty long!

In order to navigate through our guide better, we have placed a couple of links below to take you directly to the countries you are interested in.

Cambodia

Cambodia has become increasingly popular in the recent past largely because of its famous Ankor Wat temple. Over time people started backpacking and exploring other parts of the country and its popularity grew further. In fact, the country is a highly recommended spot to spend October in Asia.

1. Siem Reap

Siem Reap is a gorgeous place to spend October in Asia.

Siem Reap is a gorgeous place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Siem Reap

GETTING THERE: Siem Reap International Airport is the epicentre of travel in the region, and just a ten-minute drive from the city centre. You can of course travel to Siem Reap through Cambodia, with popular routes from the capital city, Phnom Penh, or from the seaside towns of Kampot, Kep or Sihanoukville.

WHERE TO STAY: Siem Reap has a number of high-end and boutique hotels, at very reasonable rates. Its recommended to stay slightly out of the city nearer temples at a hotel like Grand Venus La Residence.

Of course, its known for the awesome, inspiring and ‘rediscovered’ Angkor Temple Complex, with its most famous landmark being Angkor Wat. But Siem Reap, the crown jewel of Cambodia.

There is more than just temple-hopping and early sunrise missions here. It’s a town bustling with eclectic art, a buzzing nightlife and bar scene and some interesting attractions that will charm even the most picky traveller.

Anyone converging on Siem Reap will of course spend a minimum of two days doing the rounds of the temples.

From channelling Angelina Jolie at the Tomb Raider Temple (Ta Prohm), beating the crowds at Angkor Thom or checking out the quieter locations like Ta Som on Preah Khan, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to historic (and oh so photogenic) temples.

Keen on food and drink? Siem Reap has a thriving culinary trade and you should definitely make a turn at one of the many lovely cafes, check out one of the high-end food tours with Taste Siem Reap or just kick back with a coffee in the arty enclave of Kandal Village.

For those looking for something more unique to do, it is worth booking a slot at the Apopo Hero Rats Centre, where they train rats to sniff out landmines!

An amazing experience which will have you itching to sponsor a little critter, a must do when visiting Siem Reap.

China

China has been on my list for as long as I can remember. A large part of my fascination stemmed from the Chinese carvings that my father loved to make when I was younger. Somehow, I have never made it to China yet. I am told that it is a great place to spend October in Asia.

2. Beijing

Beijing is a great place to spend October in Asia.

Beijing is a great place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Beijing

GETTING THERE: Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is the main airport in Beijing. Many companies offer international flights from around the world flying into Beijing. This is the main way people get into the city.

Another way is to cross the Hong Kong and China border via rail from Hung Hom station to Beijing West. You still have to have your passports and visas in order, and you are not allowed to stop on or off at other stations. A high-speed train is available that takes 9 hours or there are overnight sleeper trains.

WHERE TO STAY: Leo Hostel in the Xicheng district is a great option for backpackers. It is only a 10-minute walk away from the famous Forbidden City and a 12-minute walk away from Qianmen Square.

Getting around from Leo Hostel is easy too as it is only a 10-minute walk away from the subway station. The guestrooms are all air-conditioned with options from a single room, twin rooms and shared dorm rooms. There is even an onsite restaurant serving local and international cuisine.

Beijing has many great sightseeing opportunities, but none quite reach the levels of the Great Wall of China.  The Great Wall of China is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and as you reach this beautiful man-made site, you will see why.

It stretches 13,000 miles in length and was built in the 14th through to the 17th century A.D, during the Ming dynasty. If that isn’t enough, you can camp overnight on the wall for a unique and magical experience

Another hot spot is The Forbidden City. Explore Chinas most treasured palace and you go back in time to witness the amazing architecture. The Forbidden City is best viewed with a guide as they will tell you the rich history the palace has to offer.

Beijing doesn’t just have great sight-seeing spots but also some delicious food. One of the most famous and desired is the mouth-watering Peking duck. This is not to be missed when visiting Beijing.

For people wanting to taste more local cuisine there are many street stalls and markets dotted all around Beijing. The food is often spicy so if this is for you, you’ll be in heaven.

By Kerrie & Woody from Just Go Travelling

Tours in Beijing, China To Consider: One of the best tours is the Private All-Inclusive Day Tour of Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and Mutianyu Great Wall. If you love food and want to maximize your time in the city, then take the Night Foodie Tour!

India

As an Indian, I can attest that there are a lot of great places in the country to add to your list of spots to spend October in Asia. The best part about the season is the fact that the climate is generally cooler without the monsoons that ravage through the country in the previous months.

October is one of my favorite months to travel especially when it comes to the west coast.

3. Coorg

Coorg is a wonderful place to spend October in Asia.

Coorg is a wonderful place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Coorg

GETTING THERE: The nearest airport is Mangalore (140 kms). The nearest railway station is Mysore (120 Kms). Coorg is well connected by road with major cities like Bangalore, Mangalore, Mysore and other major nearby cities of South India.

If you are arriving at Bangalore or Mysore airport, you can catch FLY BUS (AC Volvo) from the airport itself. Coorg is well connected by road with major cities of Karnataka, so you can reach by Bus or can hire a cab to reach Coorg by road.

WHERE TO STAY: Coorg is divided in small towns like Madikeri,Virajpet, Somwarpet etc. Coorg is all about Coffee, I would recommend staying in homestays with coffee Plantations for 2 Nights and rest of days you can stay in Luxury Jungle resorts.

Coorg is famously known as ‘Scotland of India’, located on the slopes of western Ghats. The tiny hill station produces one of the finest high-quality coffees and offers picturesque landscapes with verdant mountains, rolling green Hills, dense forests, waterfalls and small treks in the jungle.

The Major Coorg Sightseeing includes Talacauvery (origin of Cauvery river), Abbey waterfalls, Raja’s Tomb, Raja’s seat, Madikeri fort, Dubare elephant camp and Nisargdhama. You can’t miss the colourful Nomdroling Monastery which is said to be only Buddhist settlement in South India.

If you love Indian spices, then take a coffee Plantation walk and know about coffee and spices harvesting in Coorg.

The rainy season runs from June-September in Coorg, from October it starts Winter season and atmosphere becomes pleasant with No rain and heat. You can still witness the green mountains and splendid waterfalls. This is best time to enjoy the sheer beauty of jungles and mountains of Coorg.

4. Delhi

If Delhi is the place you want to go, then it should be at the top of your list of places to spend October in Asia.

If Delhi is the place you want to go, then it should be at the top of your list of places to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Delhi

GETTING THERE: Being the capital city of India, Delhi is well-connected by air with all the major cities and countries across the world. An efficient air, rail, and road network makes it easy to commute between Delhi and other Indian cities.

WHERE TO STAY: The neighbourhoods in Central and South Delhi are some of the best when it comes to great accommodations.

For those who want to stay near the airport – Aerocity, Mahipalpur, and Dwarka are the best bet. The Leela Palace in Chanakyapuri, The Imperial Hotel in Connaught Place, and Andaz Delhi Aerocity – Concept by Hyatt are some of the best hotels in Delhi.

The chaotic and colourful capital of India – Delhi never fails to surprise its visitors. It has all the ingredients of being a top bucket-list destination.

While Old Delhi intrigues you with its medieval gems packed in the narrow alleyways like Red Fort (Lal Quila), Jama Masjid, and Ghalib ki Haweli; New Delhi charms you with its intense blend of nature, art, culture, and architecture like Humayun’s Tomb, India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Jantar Mantar, Lodhi Gardens, and more.

Though, new additions, Lodhi Art District and Waste to Wonder Theme Park have quickly become two of the best places to visit in Delhi. What’s the best time to discover Dillwalon ki Dilli (a city of large-hearted people)? Well, October is, hands-down, the best time to visit Delhi.

Delhi is infamous for its extreme weather conditions. Too hot or too cold. October is one month when the weather is just right. It’s the time of the year when Delhi has said bye to harsh summer and is yet to say hi to cold winter.

The temperature ranges from 20 to 25 degrees. The pleasant and favorable weather makes exploration easy-peasy.

By Anjali from Travel Melodies

Tours In Delhi, India To Consider: If you don’t want to head out into the chaos of Delhi on your own, consider taking a Private Full Day New and Old Delhi City Tour. If you have time, you can even take a tour to the Taj Mahal!

5. Kolkata

Have you considered spending October in Asia in Kolkata?

Have you considered spending October in Asia in Kolkata?

LOCATION: Kolkata

GETTING THERE: Fly into Netaji Subhash Chandra International Airport or Kolkata Airport. Kolkata is also well connected with trains from rest of India.

WHERE TO STAY: Sudder Street area in Kolkata has a lot of hotels and guest houses of different budget

One of the best places to spend in Asia during October is Kolkata in India. The main reason is that October is the time for Durga Puja celebration in Kolkata. Also, October has pleasant weather and is not as taxing as the hot and humid summers of Kolkata.

Kolkata is a charming city also known as the city of joy. Boasting of rich cultural heritage, there are many interesting places to visit in Kolkata. For the first-timers, a visit to Victoria Memorial, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kalighat Temple, Dalhousie Square, Princep Ghat, Dakshineshwar Temple and Belur Math are a must. Also, you should not miss out on the lip-smacking street food and delicious Bengali cuisine of Kolkata.

October is the festive season in Kolkata. Durga Puja is the biggest festival in Kolkata and is celebrated across a week in Kolkata. The entire city is decked up and is decorated with lights. Pandals (a temporary structure set up to worship Goddess Durga) are set up across the city celebrating the festival of Durga Puja.

People are out of their houses all evening and night during the 5 days of the festival. Visiting Kolkata during the Durga Puja is an experience in itself. It can be overwhelming at first, but in very few places you will see such festivities and bonhomie among people.

By Amrita and Agniswar from Tale of 2 Backpackers

Tours In Kolkata, India To Consider: You can take a tour to discover the highlights of the city. The city is a foodies paradise which is why I highly recommend the food tours!

6. Mysore

Mysore is a great cultural hotspot to spend October in Asia.

Mysore is a great cultural hotspot to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Mysore

GETTING THERE: You can fly into Bangalore and then take the train or bus to Mysore.

WHERE TO STAY: Grand Mercure Mysore

Mysore is one of my favourite cities in South India. While other Indian cities can be hectic and chaotic, Mysore has a relaxed atmosphere. Furthermore, it is a colourful and beautiful city with its royal heritage and colonial architecture.

For six centuries, up until 1956 it was the capital of the kingdom of the Wodeyars. There are still lots of palaces from this time. Most famous is the Mysore palace, the former residence of the Mysore royal families. The interior is as colorful as what you see outside.

While the Mysore palace is the biggest and most magnificent palace in Karnataka, it is not the only palace in Mysore. If you like you can visit an art gallery in the Jagan Mohan palace or dine like a king or queen in the beautiful Lalith Mahal palace.

For those that love good food, Mysore also has lots to offer. Whether it is the famous Mysore Masala dosa, a south Indian thali or the sweet Mysore pak candies. You will find the best street food in Mysore at the bustling Devaraja market.

October is one of the best months to visit Mysore. Not only is there great weather during that time, but the city also celebrates Dussehra. The palace will be illuminated daily and there is a procession through the city with music and dance. October in Mysore is therefore a memorable experience

Indonesia

Indonesia is one of the most popular destinations in South East Asia. It is one of the best places to spend October in Asia. While Bali is definitely at the top location on most lists, there are many options that are lesser explored and have fewer tourists.

7. Bali

Bali is such a gorgeous place and it is one of the popular spot to spend October in Asia.

Bali is such a gorgeous place and it is one of the popular spot to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Bali

GETTING THERE: International flights to Bali land at Ngurah Rai International Airport, located 13km south of Denpasar and 2.5km from Kuta.

WHERE TO STAY: Bali has so many choices depending on your budget and the type of holiday experience you are after. If you want surf, sunsets and shopping you won’t need to head further than Kuta, Legian or Seminyak, but if you want a truly spiritual experience Ubud is the place to stay.

Canggu is for the laid back, boho beach lover and Uluwatu will see you in an upscale clifftop resort. For those looking for somewhere away from the crowds and steeped in tradition head to Candidasa.

October is one of the best times to visit Bali, there is little rain and low humidity as it is the end of the dry season. The temperature is usually in the high twenties.

Although Bali is a small island, it is a true paradise with plenty of spectacular places to visit. From the golden beaches, tranquil temples, and the breath taking rice terraces of Jatiluwih and Tegallalang. The cascading rice terraces of Jatiluwih, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most visited places in Bali.

Known as the island of the Gods there are some awe-inspiring temples to visit. Tanah Lot perched on a rock surrounded by sea, Uluwatu, high on a cliff with an open-air amphitheatre or the prettiest of them all, Ulun Danu Beratan.

The cuisine in Bali is exceptional, catering for every palate. When in Bali, do as the locals do and try the traditional Balinese experience megibung.

Eight succulent dishes together on one large tray with Balinese Chicken Soup, white rice, Chicken Satay, Grilled Prawns, Beans, Sambal and more. All these dishes are delightfully fresh, spicy, and zesty.

But no trip to Bali would be complete without experiencing a massage as Bali is the place to relax, recharge and be pampered. They are blissful, dreamy, and affordable, ranging from a massage on the beach by a local through to a full day spa treatment.

8. Yogjakarta

If exploring temples is your thing then Yogyakarta is the perfect place to spend October in Asia.

If exploring temples is your thing then Yogyakarta is the perfect place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Yogjakarta (Yogja)

GETTING THERE: You can easily fly to Yogja from Jakarta. Your flight will take about one and a half hours. Alternatively, you can take the train from the Jakarta central station. Although you will be on the train for at least 7 hours (most of the time 8), the tracks will take you through rolling hills, rice paddies and offer amazing views!

WHERE TO STAY: Most people head to Yogja for the famous Borobudur and Prambanan temples. I would do those on different days (lots of walking!) as they actually lie on the opposite sides of the city with Borobudur being quite far. I would book at least 1 night close to Borobudur so you can head off to the temple in the morning.

I would recommend staying at Gopalan Borobudur for a magical stay overlooking the rice paddies. In Yogja – when you want to visit Prambanan, I would recommend staying in Adhisthana Hotel Yogyakarta.

I don’t think I can overstate how cheap good quality, luxury hotels are in this city! You will have loads to choose from.

Yogyakarta is often dubbed as the cultural capital of Indonesia. This city houses not only the famous Buddhist temple of Borobudur, but also the beautiful Hindu temples of Prambanan. Suffice to say that Yogja is an ancient city with lots of little shrines and temples hidden away in alleyways and side streets.

I would recommend visiting Prambanan in the evening – you will have the temples for yourself and the sunset is truly magical here.

Try and find a restaurant overlooking the temples for your dinner. There are several such as Ramayana Resto offering international buffets at a reasonable price – but the view of the lit-up temples in the distance is mesmerising!

Sono-Budoyo Museum is also worth visiting if you have some time on your hands. This is a museum displaying beautiful Indonesian art and design. I also remember being really impressed by the Kraton – the Royal Palace. It is not only incredibly big, the beautiful art and craftmanship has stayed with me until this day.

Taman Sari is the perfect place to snap some Instagram pictures and go shopping at Jalan Malioboro. Trust me: you will find the same tourist tat as you would in Jakarta or Denpasar – just way cheaper.

Overall, Yogja is one of those cities you only need to stay a couple of days in – but I would say that any trip to Indonesia is not complete without at least seeing Borobudur and Prambanan!

Japan

Another country that was quick to come up on our list of places to spend October was Japan. The gorgeous landscape that has become synonymous with the country combined with the delicious food and courteous people all add to its allure. If you ask me, this is one of the items on this list that I would hop to if I could. Maybe the future will take me there sometime soon.

9. Fukuoka

Many cities throughout Asia have direct flights to Fukuoka Airport. If you are coming from farther afield, you will likely arrive via Seoul or Tokyo. Fukuoka’s airport is an easy 20-minute subway ride from the city center.

Fukuoka’s Hakata train station also connects Fukuoka to cities all over Japan via the shinkansen (bullet train). Finally, there is a ferry from Busan, South Korea.

WHERE TO STAY: The best areas are Hakata, Tenjin, Akasaka, and Ohori Park. While you can stay in a hotel or hostel, I recommend using Airbnb in Fukuoka

Fukuoka, Japan is a fantastic city to visit any time of year – there is always something to do. But October is particularly nice, because it’s some of the best weather of the year, allowing you to take advantage of everything Fukuoka has to offer.

Fukuoka is known throughout Japan for its delicious food, and a great way to experience local cuisine is by eating at a yatai. Yatais are outdoor food stalls where diners sit on chairs or stools pulled up to the counter and watch their food being prepared.

It’s a fun and festive atmosphere, and you won’t find yatais elsewhere in Japan.

Other must-do outdoor activities in Fukuoka include visiting the ruins of the Fukuoka Castle and strolling the path around the huge pond in nearby Ohori Park. The pond was once part of the castle’s moat system. Ohori Park also has a beautiful Japanese garden and a delicious restaurant with outdoor seating.

Momochi Beach is another good area to enjoy the beautiful October weather in Fukuoka. While you won’t see many sunbathers at this time of year, you can walk the beachfront path, enjoy delicious food at the restaurants, and watch a beautiful Fukuoka sunset from one of the best spots in the city.

Finally, if you visit Fukuoka in October, you can also catch Nakasu Matsuri, a colorful street festival featuring amateur wrestling, taiko drummers, and women carrying floats through the streets.

10. Takayama

Takayama is a lovely place to spend October in Asia.

Takayama is a lovely place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Takayama

GETTING THERE: The easiest way to get to Takayama is from Nagoya. Even if you travel there from cities like Osaka, Kyoto, or Tokyo, first head to Nagoya and from there either take the JR Takayama Line or a highway bus directly to Takayama.

WHERE TO STAY: There are hotels and hostels for every budget in Takayama, but as mentioned before during the festival they are booked out very quickly, so make sure to plan ahead.

For a budget option try K’s House Takayama, a popular hostel. If you are looking for an unforgettable experience in a beautiful Japanese Ryokan there is no better hotel than Honjin Hiranoya Annex.

With amazing seasonal events throughout the year, Japan is a truly memorable place to visit in Asia. Every month has an unforgettable traditional festival going on, you just have to know what you are looking for.

In October, it’s time for Takayama’s world famous autumn festival. It draws huge crowds each year, domestic as well as international travellers and hotels in the surroundings are booked out way in advance.

Takayama is a picturesque town in the Japanese alps, worth a visit any time of the year, but the festival is a spectacular opportunity to see old traditions mixed with modern festival culture.

During the festival hundreds of years old festival floats are pulled through the streets of the town, mechanical wooden doll performances take place, and the parade during the night is the top highlight.

Food stalls offering the famous festival food are set up on the road along the river and it is almost impossible to pass without buying something every couple of meters.

Malaysia

The first time that we visited Malaysia was during a work trip. It took us to the island of Borneo. One that I must admit, I had never heard off at that time. Fast forward a couple of years and this country has become one of my favourite places in Asia, with us making multiple trips to different parts of Borneo.

We still have to visit the mainland and we plan to try to do so soon. You can see why I was thrilled that Malaysia was added to our list of great places to spend October in Asia.

11. Danum Valley

Have you considered spending October in Asia in Danum valley.

Have you considered spending October in Asia in Danum valley.

LOCATION: Danum Valley Conservation Area

GETTING THERE: The Danum Valley is about 2 hours drive from Lahad Datu, a major town on the southwestern coast of Sabah. You need a permit, a guide, and a set of wheels to get to and around the Danum Valley, which is not serviced by public buses — the most cost and time-effective way to get there is on a 3D/2N tour from Lahad Datu.

WHERE TO STAY: You have two options in two opposite sides of the reserve. The cheapest is the Field Research Centre, which has dorms and two categories of chalets. The super deluxe Borneo Rainforest Lodge caters to everyone else.

The Danum Valley Conservation Area is one of Sabah’s, and Malaysian Borneo, most pristine rain forests. Since it has survived years upon years of logging and looting because of its scientific importance, the Danum Valley thrives with wildlife such as orangutans, mouse deer, tropical snakes, and even pygmy elephants. And yes: there’s an incredibly high chance to see them.

October is a perfect month to see the Danum Valley because on one hand it’s the end of the European summer season, and thus you’ll get fewer tourists. On the other, it is the last month before the rainy season starts in Sabah. This is one perfect time to decide to visit the Danum Valley and enjoy it at its best.

The best times of the day to explore the jungle are early morning when it’s easier to spot orangutans as they leave their nests, and at night — a whole different world dominated by insects, spiders, and sleeping birds on low branches.

12. Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is a fun place to spend October in Asia.

Kuala Lumpur is a fun place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Kuala Lumpur

GETTING THERE: Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia so many international flights land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). For domestic travels, there are plenty of trains that’ll take you to KL.

WHERE TO STAY: Element by Westin is an eco-friendly, business hotel from the Marriott company. It is a five-minute walk to the nearest train station. If you prefer more budget-friendly options, there are hostels and guesthouses in the Bukit Bintang area.

Kuala Lumpur is a good place to visit in October as it is the low season for tourism. October is the start of the rainy season, yet the rain doesn’t last all day. There will be intense downpour for an hour and then the skies clear up for the rest of the day. You’ll need at least 3 to 4 days in Kuala Lumpur to explore the attractions.

The highlights include visiting the Petronas Towers for panoramic views of the city, walking along the suspension bridges at the KL ECO Park, exploring the Perdana Botanical Gardens, seeing street art in Bukit Bintang, and shopping at Central Market for handicrafts.

Since KL is a diverse city that blends Malaysian, Chinese, and Indian cultures, add a visit to Chinatown and Little India in Brickfields. It is an opportunity to explore the temples, observe architecture, wander through the streets, and try the delicious food.

If you have the opportunity, take a day trip to Batu Caves and climb the colorful 272 steps to see several Hindu shrines in the cave.

One of the best parts about visiting KL is easy access to public transportation. From buses, trains, to cars on the ride-hailing app, Grab, it is easy to travel around the city and neighbouring areas for an affordable price.

By Jackie and Justin from Life Of Doing

Tours In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia To Consider: If you want to do a lot in a day then I highly recommend taking the Half-Day Batu Caves and Cutural Tour. If you have more time on your hands then do the Genting Highlands Day Trip.

13. Penang

Penang is a fun spot for foodies if you are looking for a spot to spend October in Asia.

Penang is a fun spot for foodies if you are looking for a spot to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Penang

GETTING THERE: Penang has an international airport or many buses head here from other parts of Malaysia

WHERE TO STAY: Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang

Penang is a fabulous place to visit in October as long as you don’t mind some rain which is usually over quickly. This time of year is low season which leads to more bargains and less tourists.

There is much to do in Penang. I recommend visiting Penang Hill on the funicular tram for great views. The tram ride itself is fun and passes through the steepest tunnel in the world.

At the top there are temples, playgrounds, food courts and an owl museum. Kek Lok Si temple is nearby and is also worth a visit. It is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia.

After you’ve had an introduction to Penang, take a stroll around UNESCO-listed George Town.

By foot or cycle rickshaw is the best way to take it in but it does get hot so do this first thing in the morning or early evening. Check out Fort Cornwallis, Peranakan Mansion, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, Love Lane, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Armenian Street and keep a look out for Penang’s famous street art.

Then, of course, there are all of the natural attractions of Penang to enjoy. Most of Penang is jungle covered and there are many beaches. Heading to Penang National Park is a great way to experience this side of the island. There are so many things to do in Penang that you are spoiled for choice.

Finally, Penang is known as the culinary capital of Malaysia for a reason! Eat everything you can! Hawker centres are a great way to get to taste a variety of food. Some good ones are Long Beach Kafe, Gurney Drive Hawker Centre and New Lane Hawker Centre.

By Sharon from Dive Into Malaysia

Tours In Penang, Malaysia To Consider: Have limited time? Take the Penang City & Temple Tour with Penang Hill(Fast Lane) & Kek Lok Si tour. Just make sure you don’t miss the food tours of the city because Penang is all about the food!

14. Tioman Island

Another beautiful spot to spend October in Asia is Tioman island.

Another beautiful spot to spend October in Asia is Tioman island.

LOCATION: Tioman island

GETTING THERE: It is quite a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Tioman Island. First you need to get to Mersing, the coastal city which has a ferry directly to Tioman. There are flights available or expect a 4-5 hour car or bus ride.  From Mersing, the ferry then takes about two hours to reach Tioman Island.

WHERE TO STAY: We loved our stay at the Juara Turtle Project. If you’d like to volunteer with a reputable conservation organization while you’re on Pulau Tioman, they run a wonderful program and you’ll meet travelers from all over the world.

We also stayed at a responsible guesthouse in Juara Bay called Riverview Chalets, which we recommend if you don’t want to work during your stay but do want to support a sustainable accommodation provider.

They are closely associated with the Turtle Project and help to fund some of their work, and their location is unbeatable! The chalets are nestled in between the beachfront and some mangroves that you can explore.

On the other side of the island, Melina Beach Resort is a great family-friendly choice, and Japamala is a luxury eco-resort.

There are a couple other sustainable and eco friendly options available. We found early October to be a great time to spend on Tioman Island. We arrived very late September and enjoyed several weeks on Tioman, with an average temperature of 29°C / 84°F.

October marks the end of Tioman’s high season, so it is not as crowded which is always nice. The monsoon usually starts in November, so the weather is getting warmer and a little rainier, but it is not too uncomfortable or an everyday occurrence.

During our stay it rained on a few days, but mostly we enjoyed sunny days and warm nights. It was definitely humid though, so we took full advantage of the cool ocean and mangrove forests!

There is little wind on Tioman and the protected Juara Bay is perfect for swimming and snorkelling as it’s calm and safe, and there are three coral reefs to explore. The bay also has amazing local cafes all along the coast and we loved sampling their delicious food.

Other locations around the island also have coral reefs, secluded beaches and great restaurants, so you’re not restricted to Juara area either.

And the island also boasts intact primary rainforest which you can hike through, natural waterfalls, and wildlife spotting. It is truly an oasis that as yet isn’t as tourist-y as many other tropical islands, and I hope never is.

Pakistan

One of the lesser explored regions in Asia is Pakistan. There are many gorgeous places here that have become increasingly popular with the people who have venture in this direction. Like India, Pakistan too is a great place to spend October in Asia.

15. Lahore

As you can see from the pictures, Lahore is a great place to spend October in Asia.

As you can see from the pictures, Lahore is a great place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Lahore

GETTING THERE: If you’re coming from outside Pakistan, you can fly into Allama Iqbal International Airport, which is around 20 mins from Lahore’s city centre. If you’re arriving from within Pakistan, you can use a bus company called Faisal Movers — they connect Lahore to other big cities such as Islamabad and Karachi.

WHERE TO STAY: Budget recommendation – Lahore Backpackers Hostel ($10/night); comfort recommendation – Lawrence View Hotel ($20/night); luxury recommendation – Luxus Grand Hotel ($70/night)

Lahore is one of the most incredible cultural destinations you can visit in October. Not yet contaminated by international tourism, this city retains its authenticity and gives you a great glimpse into real local life in Pakistan.

Lahore is also filled with architectural treasures from the 16th century Mughal Empire, making it a great place to learn about the history of Pakistan. In October, the weather is perfectly warm with little to no rain; in fact, it is one of the most suitable months to explore this city!

Some of the best places to visit in Lahore are Badshahi Mosque, Lahore Fort, Tomb of Jahangir, Masjid Wazir Khan, Lahore Museum, and Grand Jamia Mosque. I also highly recommend strolling the bazaars to make friends with locals and get to know their culture; two of the most popular ones are Anarkali Bazaar and the market at Delhi Gate.

For one of the most spectacular views of the city, head over to Cooco’s Den restaurant; you can have dinner there while watching the sun set over Badshahi Mosque — an absolutely spectacular scene.

Last but not least, a trip to Lahore would be incomplete without tasting its exquisite local cuisine. This city is the food capital of Pakistan, so expect some very flavourful meals and a big foodie scene! Some of the key local dishes to try are karahi, nihari, tawa chicken, tikka, and daal mash.

Ever considered spending October in Asia in Singapore?

LOCATION: Singapore

GETTING THERE: Singapore’s Changi Airport is conveniently located less than 20 minutes from the most popular tourist areas. With flights to 400 cities and an incredible facility that is an attraction itself with the world’s largest indoor waterfall. it has won numerous awards year after year as the world’s best airport.

WHERE TO STAY: If this is your first trip to Singapore, the Marina Bay neighbourhood is walking distance to many tourist sites. For nightlife, the Clarke Quay area is your spot. Chinatown is a good place to find budget accommodations. Families will enjoy the Sentosa area.

The weather is generally comfortable in October but you can expect some rainy days due to Singapore’s tropical location. Towards the end of October, the Hindu festival of Deepavali, will add extra flair to the Little India neighbourhood.

There are bright colored lights and special Indian sweets to enjoy. A 15 minute walk from Little India will take you to Haji Lane. A hipster neighborhood with fun boutiques, cafes and cool street art.

The futuristic Gardens by the Bay is a must-see in Singapore. A biodome called Cloud Forest simulates a tropical mountain region with cool mist and a 30-meter indoor waterfall. A crowd favourite is the Supertree grove, with a skywalk for a view from above and a free nightly light show at 7:45pm.

Fun dance music is played as the giant Supertree structures light up in different colours to match the music. For mind blowing views of the area, you can head to the rooftop bar at the Marina Bay Sands hotel.

If you have kids in tow, take the cable car to Sentosa island for one of your days. It is full of adventure with theme parks like Universal Studios, a waterpark, aquarium, animal encounters and more. Sentosa Island is also the best place to visit the beach.

Singapore is a great place to do a stopover for a few days like we did on a trip to Bali or other points in Asia. Its clean, safe and definitely worth the trip.

Tours In Singapore To Consider: One of the best ways to explore Singapore is via a city tour. You could also take a duck tour! If you want something really different then try a flight experience where you can see what flying a Boeing 737 is like!

South Korea

South Korea is a fun place to think about spending October in Asia. Don’t let the small size of the country fool you. South Korea has a lot to offer when it comes to natural beauty, food and history. Definitely worth putting on your list.

17. Andong

Andong is a great place to spend October in Asia.

Andong is a great place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Andong is the capital and largest city of North Gyeongsang Province in Korea. It is said to be the ‘most Korean place in Korea’.

GETTING THERE: Getting to Andong is fairly easy. You can take a 3-hour bus ride from Seoul or a 2.5-hour ride from Busan. You can spend 2-3 days in Andong to take it all in and explore a few of the other sites around the city.

WHERE TO STAY: Couchsurfing is a great option in Andong. If not, you can stay anywhere in the city. Accommodations are limited, especially during the Mask Dance Festival, so make sure you book ahead of time!

Let’s be honest, Andong is not on many travellers’ bucket lists, but it’s well worth the visit, especially if you’re in Asia in October. The best time to visit Andong is at the end of September or early October when the city plays host to the annual Mask Dance festival.

During the 10 days, the usually quiet town of Andong comes alive with tons of activities, performances, and festivities taking place all around the city.

The best place to take it all in is at the main site, the Mask Dance Park. The entrance to the park is free, although there are some paying shows at night. At the park, you can see a ton of free performances, eat local fare, dance, partake in games, and even make your own mask.

There’s something for everyone, and it’s a great place to entertain kids.

If the festival is not your thing, you can check out the traditional folk village of Hahoe and stay in a choga. You can also hike up Buyongdae Cliff to get a great view of the surrounding area. Better yet, you can have a shot of soju at the Andong Soju museum or check out the Confucian Culture Museum.

Or, you can hike around the Moonlight bridge park and Walk across the Wolyeonggyo Bridge, the longest wooden bridge in Korea.

The Mask Dance festival is a great way to immerse yourself in the traditional folk culture of Korea if you are in Asia in October. It is a unique way to see a side of Andong (and South Korea) that not many people see.

18. Seoul

Seoul is a great place to spend October in Asia.

Seoul is a great place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION : Seoul

GETTING THERE: Incheon International Airport (ICN) is the principal airport serving
international flights to Seoul. From there the AREX Express train to Seoul Station takes approximately 40 minutes and departs every 20 to 40 minutes.

There is also a slower stopping service departing every 5 to 10 minutes that will take closer to an hour to reach Seoul Station.

The service also serves Gimpo International Airport which whilst mainly a domestic airport also offers shorter international routes to Asian destinations.

South Korea also boasts a hugely efficient and fast rail network. Journeys between Busan in the south and Seoul in the north taking a little over 2 ½ hours to cover the 325 km.

WHERE TO STAY: As a major world city Seoul offers the usual mix of luxury hotels, budget guest-houses and self-catering Air BnB style accommodation. The important decision is which of its many suburbs to base yourself in.

Insadong in the centre of Seoul close to main attractions is a popular family destination and Myeongdong ideal for budget travellers, shoppers and food lovers. The university area of Hongdae with its numerous bars and restaurants perfect for party lovers.

First timers should probably head for iconic Gangnam, centrally located and offering a good combination of restaurants, shopping and attractions.

Seoul in October is arguably the time of year when this modern city is at its most colourful. The cooler, less humid weather conditions combined with abundance of fall oranges and reds make this the best time to visit.

Royal sites such as the splendid Gyeongbokgung Palace in the north of the City look especially resplendent at this time. These rich colours combined with the large numbers of visitors dressed in traditional Hanbok costume makes this a fabulous day trip.

These cooler conditions are also ideal for walking tours of Seoul’s many suburbs. Namdaemun Market, the largest market in South Korea home to over 10,000 individual stalls selling a huge range of goods and street food a prime example.

Alternatively, follow the example of many locals and head out of the city for hikes through surrounding areas such as Mount Inwagasan or Namsan. Both offer stunning views across Seoul as well as the opportunity to walk through lush and fragrant forests.

October is also the perfect time to sit and enjoy Korean food treats such as Bibimbap and Kimchi. Koreans love their bars and restaurants and Soju a distilled liquor available in a variety of flavours is perfect to wash down a plate of one of our favourites, Korean Fried Chicken.

Seoul in October also offers you the opportunity to try one of Korean’s favourite sporting pastimes.

This is the month when the popular KBO baseball league holds it end of season play off games. The impressive indoor Gocheok Sky Dome in the west of the city is a huge draw, especially if you’re unfortunately hit with an infrequent October rainstorm.

Taiwan

It was just recently that Taiwan made it on to our bucketlist. This gorgeous country is often overlooked and is a great place to think of spending October in Asia. The large cities, the gorgeous national parks and the pleasant weather are all reasons why.

19. Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung is a lovely spot to spend October in Asia.

Kaohsiung is a lovely spot to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Kaohsiung

GETTING THERE: Most people enter and exit Taiwan through Taipei, so you’ll most likely be traveling from Taipei to Kaohsiung.  The easiest way to get from Kaohsiung from Taipei is taking the HSR (high-speed rail).  It takes about 2 hours and costs approximately $50 USD.

WHERE TO STAY: I highly recommend you stay within walking distance of Formosa Boulevard Station.  It is the only metro station in Kaohsiung where the Orange and Red metro lines intersect and staying near the station makes getting around Kaohsiung super quick and easy.

I always stay at Kindness Hotel.  It is two blocks away from Formosa Boulevard Station, modern, and has complimentary ice cream and tea all day.  It is the perfect place to relax after a long day exploring Kaohsiung.

Kaohsiung is located in southern Taiwan and is the second largest city in Taiwan. The most famous attraction in Kaohsiung are the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. They are said to reverse your luck if you enter through the mouth of the dragon and exit through the mouth of the tiger.

The pagodas are located on Lotus Pond.  There are 12 other temples and pagodas around the pond so be sure to take the time to visit them all!

Fo Guang Shan Monastery is the one sight in Kaohsiung that you cannot miss visiting!  It is the birthplace of a form of humanistic Buddhism known as Fo Guang Shan.  The religion is known for its modernism and beautifully designed temples.

Fo Guang Shan is home to the largest bronze sitting statue in the world.  The statue is called Big Buddha and sits over 108 meters tall!  It is the centrepiece of the entire monastery and draws crowds from around the world.

Other Kaohsiung attractions you should visit include Cijin Island (just a 5-minute ferry ride from Kaohsiung), Martyrs Shrine, Dream Mall, Pier II Art District, and the History Museum.

Kaohsiung is an amazing city that shows you a different side of Taiwan than Taipei does.  I highly recommend you spend 3 days in Kaohsiung while you are in Taiwan, so you can explore all the city has to offer without feeling rushed.

20. Taichung

Consider spending your October in Asia in Taichung.

Consider spending your October in Asia in Taichung.

LOCATION: Taichung

GETTING THERE: Taichung is well-connected by train to Taipei and other cities along the western coast of Taiwan

WHERE TO STAY: Chance Hotel

Until recently, the city of Taichung was completely off the radar for most foreign visitors to Taiwan. Even guidebooks stated rather bluntly that there was nothing to see here. But Taichung has really transformed itself into an arts and cultural hub, and in my opinion, it is a must-see for anyone visiting Taiwan.

The transformation started with Rainbow Village, which is as colorful as it sounds.

This former military dependents’ village was going to be demolished, but the last remaining resident, who was in his late eighties, refused to leave. Instead, he painted the walls of the houses with bright, playful images of memories from his childhood, and it quickly became Taichung’s hottest tourist attraction.

At 96 years old, Rainbow Grandpa still welcomes visitors and poses for selfies with them, and he always has a smile on his face.

Other spots that you should add to your Taichung itinerary include the Liuchuan Riverside Walk, the Taichung Cultural Heritage Park and the Natural Way Six Arts Cultural Center. If you are keen to see more street art, then I also recommend Painted Animation Lane and the Qianyue Building.

The latter is a dilapidated entertainment and residential complex that has been taken over by a street art collective.

A visit here is a great introduction to urban exploration, and you’ll have a great view of the city if you climb all the way up to the roof. Just don’t attempt to climb on the UFO-shaped rotating restaurant, as the top floor is very unstable.

21. Taipei

Taipei is an interesting place to spend October in Asia.

Taipei is an interesting place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Taipei

GETTING THERE: When you first arrive in Taiwan, you’ll most likely be at Taoyuang Airport which is about 30 to 40 minutes away from the capital city of Taipei. Once you arrive, you can take a taxi or a bus which will drive you to your destination.

WHERE TO STAY: If you want to stay where all the fun and excitement is, then you’ll definitely want to stay in the Xinyi District. Here you’ll find all kinds of top tier hotels, attractions and food stalls all waiting for you to enjoy.

Taiwan which is often called the “beautiful island” is a very extraordinary place to visit. It is an island filled with bustling life, tasty foods, and a culture rooted deep in history. One place in particular is the most entertaining and is the capital city of Taiwan which is Taipei. There is simply so many things for you to see and do here.

Some of the top things to do here include visiting Taipei 101 which was formerly the tallest building in the world, visiting the National Palace Museum, Hiking around Elephant Mountain, viewing all the different temples, drinking bubble tea, soaking up in some hot springs, as well as enjoying the famous night markets. There is definitely something for everybody to enjoy.

The best time to come to Taiwan is usually during the September through November dates as the weather is nice and it isn’t as hot. If you come during the summer, expect the weather to be extremely hot and humid as well as it being the prime seasons for typhoons.

Likewise, if you come during the winter times, it will be really cold which can be unbearable at times. October in general usually is the perfect time as everything seems to play out nicely and nothing will get in your way.

22. Tainan

Tainan does not pop up on everyone's list but it is a great place to spend October in Asia.

Tainan does not pop up on everyone’s list but it is a great place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Tainan

HOW TO GET THERE: Tainan is easily accessed by bus, train, or high-speed rail from Taipei or other major cities in Taiwan.

The fastest way, however, to get there is to hop in the high-speed rail. From the HSR station, you’ll still need to rely on public transport to get to the city centre. But, luckily, there are plenty of buses, trains, and taxis ready to transport you to all corners of the town.

WHERE TO STAY: Tainan is quite a big city, so its best to stay somewhere central, near the train station. By doing so, you can easily explore the city’s interior on foot or take a bus or taxi to access all its attractions. The FX Hotel on Minsheng Road is an excellent base with stylish rooms at affordable rates.

Located less than 15 mins by high-speed rail from Kaohsiung, Tainan is a beautiful city full of history and culture. As the oldest city in Taiwan, the “City of Temples” is an excellent add-on to any Taiwan travel itinerary as there is so much to do.

One of the best things to do in Tainan has to be exploring its rich history. With more than 1600 temples and several historical sites built by the Dutch, Tainan is a popular hot spot among locals and travelers alike.

First, drop by Anping Old Fort, which dates back nearly 400 years. Within the fort, there is plenty to learn and see, but make sure not to miss the last remnants of the original red brick wall.

Afterward, the bustling Old Street offers a welcome reprieve and the chance to try local speciality snacks like coffin toast and mango shaved ice.

A short stroll away, you’ll find Anping Treehouse – a former salt warehouse. Today, however, this historic site is revered for its unique exterior as its wholly encapsulated in an old banyan tree.

Other highlights not to miss on your visit include admiring the beautiful architecture and treasures of Chihkan Tower, marvelling at the ornate designs of the Mazu Temple, and dropping by the most Instagrammable street in the city – Shennong Street.

October is a great month to visit Tainan as the temperatures start to cool down, and more importantly, typhoon season has passed. Tainan is a terrific city to explore, so make sure to spend at least 2-3 days here to really discover all of its charms.

Thailand

Thailand was the first country that I ever travelled to and I have to say that it knocked my socks off! The country is absolutely gorgeous and aside from the natural beauty, there are a lot of cultural hotspots to explore. A lot of people however would tell you that coast is where you should head to. My personal favourite however is a place called Chiang Mai.

23. Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a personal favourite and a great spot to spend October in Asia.

Chiang Mai is a personal favourite and a great spot to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Chiang Mai

GETTING THERE: Budget travellers might prefer public transport options to get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. There is a comfortable overnight train as well as a more budget-friendly option (either all-day or overnight).

That said, the easiest way to get to Chiang Mai is to fly. The airport is closely located to the city centre and very easy to navigate.

WHERE TO STAY: I highly recommend starting at the centrally located Villa Duang Champa, a beautiful boutique hotel in the Old Town of Chiang Mai. The rooms are beautiful, spacious and airy, the food is delicious and in the evenings, they serve up a great cocktail menu, perfect for people watching on the busy street out front.

Chiang Mai in northern Thailand is the perfect antidote to the hectic buzz of the sprawling capital, Bangkok. The city centres around beautiful historic Old Town, but also has several trendy neighbourhoods to discover. The forested hills, many topped by golden temples, close in on the city and nature is never far away.

Spend at least 5 days in Chiang Mai to do it justice. Explore the countless temples and markets in the Old Town. Discover cool coffee shops, street art and bustling bazaars in Nimmanhaemin, Baan Kang Wat or near the Ping River.

Make your way up to the famous Doi Suthep temple and explore the trails of the Doi Suthep-Pui national park. No visit to Chiang Mai is complete without a day out on rented scooters. And don’t forget to indulge in the excellent local cuisine, maybe through a cooking class?

Just make sure you stay away from unethical animal tourism (elephant riding or tiger shows) and support sustainable local tour guides instead. October is a great time to visit, even though it is still the rainy season in Thailand.

Be prepared to take cover from heavy downpours of rain every day, but be rewarded by smaller crowds, the lushest green forests and much better air quality than during the hot season.

24. Koh Lanta

I've always wanted to visit Koh Lanta and Veronika says that it is a great place to spend October in Asia.

I’ve always wanted to visit Koh Lanta and Veronika says that it is a great place to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Koh Lanta

GETTING THERE: Fly to Krabi, take a minivan transfer from the airport, which includes a ferry

WHERE TO STAY: Escape Cabins

Koh Lanta is a lovely laid-back island in the South of Thailand, to the West of Thai mainland. It lies a bit off the beaten path, because the closest airport is only in Krabi, about 2 hours away.

You can find wonderful beaches of all kinds – even secluded ones with bright white sand. The island is relatively quiet, parties are not a big thing there and usually centre only in the Klong Kong area.

I can highly recommend the much more peaceful Long Beach (Phra Ae), offering a long sandy beach with chilled beach bars and restaurants, plenty of accommodation and other places to eat and shop in the vicinity. Also, Koh Lanta’s only coworking, the KoHub, is located there.

Apart from spending the days at the beach, one can explore the beautiful South of the island covered in jungle.

In the Southernmost tip you can find a National Park with a dedicated trek in the jungle and a tiny beach with a lighthouse. If you’d like to stroll through a cute little town, head to the Old Town. Yes, that’s how it’s called. There are a few souvenir shops and plenty of restaurants, many of them even facing the ocean.

One of the most popular things to do in Koh Lanta is to take a trip to the nearby islands. The Emerald Cave is particularly special and shouldn’t be missed. A bit of snorkeling and a visit to an uninhabited island makes for a wonderful day trip.

The serene vibes that Pai emits in this pic just makes me want to pack my bags already!

LOCATION: Pai, Northern Thailand

GETTING THERE: Fly into or get the train to the beautiful city of Chiang Mai. From there you can rent a motorbike or hop on a bus to get from Chiang Mai to Pai.

WHERE TO STAY: Pai Country Hut. There are many lovely places to stay in Pai but you want to make sure you have a hammock to chill out in! Pai Country Hut is great as it is so central yet feels very peaceful too.

Many people say that October is one of the worst months to travel to Thailand in. The rainy season in the north is just finishing and the rainy season in the south of Thailand is just beginning.

However, this green season makes Thailand a great place to visit in Asia in October for budget travelers! As it is not peak season you will find cheaper accommodation and be able to be more flexible with your plans as not everywhere will be booked up.

Pai is particularly beautiful in October as all of the rice paddies are bright green making the Pai bamboo bridge trail even more beautiful! Furthermore, the waterfalls around Pai are still flowing but not as powerful as they are during the peak of the monsoon rains.

Also, as the rainy season is ending, you may be lucky and get a few sunny days! You may even be grateful of the occasional downpour!

Vietnam

I can never really stop gushing about how much I love Vietnam. With three weeks spent exploring the country, it is hard to narrow down on a place that I would call my favourite. One thing that I can say with certainty is that I did enjoy the north more than the south.

While Shawn and I spent December in the country, I have recently been informed by other travelers that it is a great place to spend October in Asia.

26. Hanoi

A foodies paradise and so much more, Hanoi is a great spot to spend October in Asia.

A foodies paradise and so much more, Hanoi is a great spot to spend October in Asia.

LOCATION: Hanoi

GETTING THERE: Hanoi is served by an international airport so you can get flights from almost anywhere, either directly to Hanoi or on frequent flights from some of the larger airports in the region.

WHERE TO STAY: I recommend staying in the French Quarter, the Ba Dinh district. It is a great location for many of the places you will want to visit and there are hostels and hotels to fit any budget in this charming old town area.

October is an ideal time to visit Hanoi as the rainy season is ending and the summer scorch is over. It is the start of peak season so it is a great time to explore the city.

Wander around the French Quarter, and while you are busy taking in life on the streets, enjoy the incredible (and cheap!) street food everywhere you go.

You’ll find some incredible hand-made silk tapestries and handicrafts that are very affordable. Tour the Ancient House on Ma May Street to see how locals lived in the late 19th century in Ba Dinh, one of the oldest neighborhoods of the city.

Visit the Temple of Literature, a stunning temple complex featuring five distinct courtyards built in 1070 dedicated to Confucius. It served as Vietnam’s first national university and it is a stunning sight to see. The One Pillar Pagoda is one of the most iconic temples in the area and there are many small and beautiful temples to visit as well, just remember to leave your shoes at the door.

Tour the Hoa Lo Prison, a.k.a. The “Hanoi Hilton” for a sobering reminder of this country’s dark past. Take a cycle ride and tour the neighbourhoods in the city and for something different and uniquely Vietnamese, check out the Thang Long Water Puppet Theater.

Be sure to go to the night market to find souvenirs to bring home, a popular thing to do in southeast Asia. Hanoi is worth visiting and there is no better time than in October!

Lanterns, culture, history and so much more is all bundled into this gem. Hoi An is the perfect spot to think of visiting in October in Asia.

LOCATION: Hoi An

GETTING THERE: The closest airport and train station to Hoi An are in Da Nang, just a 45 minute drive away. Cross-country buses can also get you to Hoi An from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and other major destinations, though it is usually a long overnight journey.

WHERE TO STAY: Accommodation options in Hoi An are plentiful, from beach side B&Bs to rice field villas to charming hotels in the UNESCO district. We prefer to stay just outside of the Old Town in a modern homestay run by a friendly local family called Leaf Homestay.

Hoi An has become one of our favourite destinations in the world. It has an old world charm and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, variety of street food and dining options, and monthly lantern festivals draw visitors from around the world to this ancient port town.

Other highlights include biking through rice paddies to neighboring villages, enjoying a beach day, getting custom clothing fitted by local tailors, and making day trips of historical significance or outdoor adventure. While tourism does overwhelm certain parts of Hoi An, we still find it worth going back year after year.

Our first stay in Hoi An was eleven nights in October. This is the rainy season, so we quickly learned the value of carrying umbrellas and ponchos with us at all times.

When the rain comes, it pours! Fortunately, rain rarely lasts all day. Which means there was still plenty of time to get out and about. A big bonus was that we were able to enjoy Hoi An with fewer crowds.

Location: Sapa, Vietnam

Getting There: Take the night train from Hanoi. There are buses that head here every day too. The train however is a less tedious experience!

Sapa is one of the coolest places to spend October in Asia. Known for its gorgeous rice fields, this hilly village is one of the top places to visit in Vietnam. During October the temperatures are extremely pleasant and range from 15 – 20 degrees Celsius which makes trekking up the mountains extremely pleasant.

Oh remember those gorgeous fields that were were talking about? Well October is the time when everyone is gearing up for the harvest season so you can see the fields in full blown.

Trekking through these fields is an easy way to enjoy the colors. Don’t worry… You won’t be in private property because there are paths that you can take. Don’t forget to stop and take loads of photographs along the way.
