Szeged is a lovely laid back city in Hungary and since we literally covered all the landmarks in half the day, we spent most of our three days exploring the restaurants in Szeged. Luckily for us there were loads of interesting ones that we could indulge our senses in. I think my waistline expanded during that time but I am not sorry!
When it comes to food in Szeged, you will find that there are places that cover all different kinds of cuisine. Hungarian, Italian and American food being the most popular choices. You will also find restaurants that serve up Mexican, Indian and Serbian food.
The café culture here is also a pretty big thing and it is not uncommon to find people sitting around just sipping a cup of coffee and relaxing. That’s exactly what we did. Here are our top picks when it comes to the restaurants in Szeged.

Best Restaurants In Szeged For Breakfast / Brunch
I love to start out with a good breakfast or brunch because it keeps the kids running for longer when their tummies are full. Luckily for us there were a number of great restaurants in Szeged for breakfast. Here were some of our favorites.
1. Essentiale brunch, Specialty Coffee And Tea
Salmon avocado bowl that we loved at one of our favorite restaurants in Szeged.
This was one of the best restaurants in Szeged that I have eaten at. It isn’t Hungarian food mind you but more of a continental style breakfast if you get what I mean. Avocado toast, Salmon toasties, smoothie bowls, shakshuka and more are all on the menu. Everything that we tried was divine.
One of the most recommended drinks is the Matcha latte. We didn’t give this a try because we are not big fans of Matcha but we did have the cappuccino which was average to good in my opinion. The food is where they truly shine. We visited just as they opened and easily got ourselves a table but it was pretty crowded when we left an hour later.
The decor of Essentiale is also pretty cute. It has a cozy vibe and has some cool scribbles on the wall in one area. What was a big hit was the small kids coloring station that was setup. As I mentioned, there was thought put into the details which made it a total joy to spend time at.
If we did not have an agenda for the day, I would probably have hung around for longer.
2. Saint Café
The outer façade of Saint café which is one of the best restaurants in Szeged for brunch.
The Saint café is one of the cool restaurants in Szeged and it was high on my list for places to catch brunch at. I’ll be honest. I haven’t eaten here. Not because it was not a nice place. Quite the contrary. We made our way to the Saint Café and found a whole festival was going on in the garden in front. Obviously the kids wanted to head to al the activities instead of the café.
The café has an incredible view and is pretty laid back. The menu is also budget friendly. It also has some great breakfast items that I will try the next time I’m there!
Best Restaurants In Szeged For Lunch / Dinner
You obviously have to stop midday again because there are so many great restaurants in Szeged. I kept finding it hard to choose. Honestly, I really wish I could have stayed longer just for the food!
3. Jobb Mint Otthon Kisvendéglő
Located on the outskirts of the city, Jobb Mint Otthon Kisvendéglő is one of the restaurants in Szeged with a very cool view because it is situated at the side of a lake. During summers you can sit outside and the tranquil environment is only disturbed by the quacking of ducks.
During the colder months, the wooden interiors are extremely welcoming and the traditional hot Hungarian food is something that locals really enjoy. The restaurant is well known for its fried carp and catfish.
It is also known for its fish soup. Just know that the quantities are HUGE! We were two adults and two kids but we still struggled to finish the fish platter alone.
The restaurant also has an outdoor play area that is great in the hotter and drier days. A small play area for young kids is also present indoors so ask your waiter about it before you are seated. We did not know that it existed till we got up to leave which was rather sad.
4. GURU
We had actually decided and made reservations for one of the different restaurants in Szeged. It was the fag end of the day and we passed GURU which was all decorated in Halloween décor.
Our kids promptly decided that we had to abandon our plans because the restaurant had the coolest ghouls and pumpkins. Luckily for us it was still early in the day and we could easily cancel our reservation without a hassle.
GURU turned out to be the best decision ever. Not only are the staff super kind and the décor really cool, you will find that pizzas are pretty on point too. Plus the costs are pretty much on the budget end which means our wallets were happy too.
GURU is also located very centrally so it is easy to access and is a great spot if you want to stop for just a quick bite too. Oh and it is also one of the cool places for brunch.
5. Kiskörössy Fish Tavern
Our last meal was in Kiskörössy Fish Tavern. This particular restaurant is located on the outskirts of the city and you may or may not need to drive to it. For us it was on our way back from Arad. The restaurant is very cozy and serves up some of the best fish soup that I have had in Hungary. We also tried some of the beef stew which was succulent.
One of the things that I loved was the cool kids corner at one end of the restaurant. Our children loved playing with the other kids here and were entertained for a very long time so we had a very peaceful meal.
Best Restaurants In Szeged For Desserts
If you have a sweet tooth then you will find that there is no shortage of restaurants in Szeged for desserts. From ice cream to decadent cakes and pastries, I think my waistline expanded a couple of inches during my time here!
6. Sugar & Candy Desszert Cukraszda
Sugar & Candy Desszert Cukraszda is one of the best restaurants in Szeged for anyone who loves sweet food.
Sometimes you stumble across a gem completely by accident. This was one of the restaurants in Szeged that took us by surprise. We were wandering around the different churches in the area when our kids called for a break. Shawn saw the sign from across the road and decided that it was a great place to stop at.
Mind you, I usually plan out my restaurants in advance and this little cafe was not one of the places that was on my radar. It looked cozy so we decided to step in and boy was I glad that we did. The inside is super cozy with a view of the Votive church. You can also choose to sit outside on a sunny day.
We chose to be inside largely because it had a nice kids play area and a small drawing station where our toddlers were thoroughly entertained after they downed their cake pops in seconds.
We on the other hand sipped on prosecco and indulged on a slice of cake. It was a truly relaxing hour that was spent here and one that I would recommend if you are in the area.
7. Dóm Cukrászda
Dóm Cukrászda is located very centrally and you could be forgiven for walking past it because it does not have an overtly attractive decor. It is however one of those places that you should not miss if you are a fan of all things sweet.
This is one of the best restaurants in Szeged for ice cream or so my research says. We however chose to eat the pastries because they were themed and obviously the kids wanted the cool decorated cake pops.
It also has an assortment of different types of coffees. I tried the caramel latte and it came with more than half the cup of cream. It may have been calorie intense but it was delicious!
One thing that we learnt was that the restaurants in Szeged are pretty phenomenal. It is hard to narrow down on what kind of cuisine you should try. I highly recommend trying the local cuisine because it is packed with flavor.
The fish based restaurants in Szeged have some really cool views and in the warmer months eating outdoors is a delight. In the colder months the very same restaurants are super cozy.
