Roti Canai Gemas road is one of the top places to catch breakfast in Penang. If you’ve been following our Penang journey, you probably know that we have been scouring the breakfast locations on the island. In order to get the local take, we asked our receptionist at the hotel and our cab drivers for their preferences. We even compared notes with fellow travelers.
Yes! Everyone comes to Penang with a list of places to head to for good food. It would be remiss of you not to come prepared!
Roti Canai Gemas Road was suggested by one of our Grab drivers. He said that the food at Roti Canai Gemas brothers was as authentic as it gets. In fact, he also mentioned that the Roti Canai Transfer Road had lost its charm since the food did not taste the same any more.
To say that it got us curious was an understatement. We obviously had to head there for breakfast the very next day. I can’t say that I was disappointed.

Roti Canai Gemas Road Address
The Roti Canai Gemas road is a great spot for breakfast!
Address: 51 29, Jalan Gemas, Taman Kampar, 10460 George Town, Pulau Pinang
Timings: Tue-Sun: 7am – 12:30pm
One of the disadvantages of heading out to this location for breakfast is that it is not centrally located. Most of the other places for breakfast in Penang are located in the heart of Georgetown. They are easy to walk to.
With two toddlers and potential rain, we decided to catch a cab. Grab was the best option. It isn’t a very long drive away.
The first thing that we noticed is that parking is easily available here. It makes a big difference for people who come here by their own transport.
Roti Canai Gemas Road Review
The food stall was busy when we arrived. As usual, there were lines for a place to sit. The tables emptied up quickly and we were ushered in. The fare here is simple, much like most of the other places. They have a menu up for ease of ordering. You do need to know a few Malay terms to navigate the order though.
The speciality here is Roti Canai with a meat curry or with egg. Alternatively you can get a Roti Bakar with soft boiled eggs.
Roti Canai Gemas Road was the only place where we got lamb curry. Lamb is known as Kambing. Daging on the other hand is beef while ayam is chicken.
We ordered one lamb curry and one chicken curry. The kids also wanted a roti bakar with soft boiled egg so obviously that got added to the list too!
The one thing that I loved about Roti Canai Gemas road was that the curry is placed half on and half off the roti canai. That way, you still get part of the flaky roti. I definitely loved the roti here. The curry was a little sweeter than expected. I think that the sweetness of curries in general is something that I need to get used to. In India, our curries are much spicier.
That being said, the lamb was amazing. The meat was soft and very tasty. Highly recommend it. The roti bakar however did not impress me much. I mean it was okay but not as great as Roti Bakar Hutton lane.
Don’t forget to order an iced tea/coffee or an iced Milo to wash down the meal. It is really refreshing especially in the hot climate.
