What Is Crete Best Known For?
Like we mentioned before, Crete is famous! It has gorgeous beaches, historical ruins, lots of delicious food and the scenery is just breathtaking. Did I mention that the weather is great all year round? Yes! That means that you don’t have to really plan your trip according to the season.
Crete is also famous for some great wine which I highly recommend trying out! Crete is also popular as a destination for cruises to the Greek islands.
If you love the great outdoors, you could also explore the numerous hiking trails that the island has to offer. Again, another highly recommended options on our things to do in Crete list but I will get to that in a bit.
Are There A Lot of Things To Do In Crete?
There are so many things to do in Crete, Greece that you could visit the island time and time again and always have a new experience. If you want to plan your trip there, I would say that you should budget for at least two to three days on the island (that doesn’t consider the time you take to get there!).
Even with two to three days in hand, you will find that you are constantly in a rush. If you are on a time crunch, this probably is your best bet. The island however invites a person to relax. So ideally I would suggest a longer trip of anything between five days to week.
Keep in mind that the East coast is a bit less explored so if you want to go offbeat then explore the things to do in Eastern Crete.
I could even do two weeks here! But that would give me a lot of free time just to indulge in the beaches if you know what I mean!
How To Get To Crete?
Since Crete is an island there are just two ways to get to it aka via flight or ferry.
Flight: Crete has three airports. Yes you heard me right! Heralion, Chania and Sitia all have connecting flights with Athens. Since Athens is an international airport, you can transit straight through to Crete.
Ferry: If you want to head to Crete by ferry (which is an experience in itself!), you have to head to Port Piraeus which is the main sea port of Athens. From there you can catch the ferry to Heralion, Chania and Sitia. Weather plays an important role. Make sure you check the ferry schedules before you plan your trip!
