Ericeira was never part of our itinerary but we found ourselves with extra time (or so we thought at that point) in Portugal and we really did not want to stay in the city. Shawn found a quaint little Airbnb run by an amazing Portuguese couple and we drove straight to Ericeira straight after our flight landed.
Honestly, I did not expect much from this little coastal town. While I have not seen much of Portugal, this spot on the map made a lasting impression on me, not because of the myriad of things to do in Ericeira but because of the kindness of the people, the landscape and the great food.
If you have already been to Lisbon or want a place that isn’t a large bustling city that is close by, I would suggest putting this little town on your list. It is the perfect getaway.

Ericeira
Before we talk about all the wonderful things to do in Ericeira, let’s talk about the city in general. Located at about 35 kilometers away from Lisbon, this gorgeous city isn’t too far away from the central hub of the country. In fact, it is a popular escape for people who live in Lisbon. Few people put it on their Portugal itinerary. Those that do are never disappointed.
It is also one of the most popular surfing destinations in the world and is Europe’s surfing mecca. In fact, when the weather turns for the warmer, people from across the continent flock here to catch some wave action.
We however did not really get to see Ericeira in its true form. With the cold winds brought on by the seasonal storms, the temperatures plummeted during our stay which means that our noses were always half frozen and we were quite flabbergasted when we saw people roaming around in shorts and sunbathing while the majority of the population were bundled up in two or three layers!
How To Get To Ericeira, Portugal
Since Ericeira is relatively close to Lisbon, it is easy to get to it by road. Generally speaking the best idea is to rent a car from the Lisbon airport and drive there. This is true if you plan to travel through Portugal. It is easy quick and convenient. If you don’t plan on renting a car then there are a couple of other options including public transport.
Bus: The bus leaves to Ericeira from Campo Grande. There are buses every hour.
Uber: You can take an Uber which is certainly more convenient if you have had a long journey.
Driving And Parking In Ericeira
One thing that we were worried about when it came to staying in the city was parking. Well, the worry was twofold. Finding parking was the first part and the second thing that we wanted was a parking spot for the night.
Luckily for us, our Airbnb accommodation had parking right in front of it which remained vacant through the day and night. The flip side was the fact that we stayed a bit away from the main city and had to drive in every time we needed something.
Our host took us around and showed us where to park. Which was really helpful. He even helped us get a sim card for our phone which was pretty easy all things considered. Parking in the main city can be found on R. da Barroca. Just note that the road is a one way. If you don’t take the first parking lot you find, you may have to circle all the way back. Oh and the parking here is free!
Things To Do In Ericeira
I have mentioned our Airbnb hosts a number of times in this article already and that is largely because they were nothing short of amazing. Warm, loving, hospital and helpful. We sat down for breakfast everyday with them and chatted as much as we could.
I even brushed up my Portuguese to such an extent I could have an intelligent conversation. Finally, those five years of studying the language came in handy! Yaay!
Our host told us that he shifted to Ericeira a couple of decades ago to get away from the Lisbon. I could see the allure. He loved the beach, the fresh air and he wanted to be away from the bustle of a big city. It was a decision that he said he never regretted.
Life in Ericeira is simple and pleasant and our host’s decision to live there, highlights what this little coastal town is famous for. The coast!
1. Hit The Beaches
As you can see, the beaches in Ericeira are drop dead gorgeous!
If you live in the city, you will find that the coast of Ericeira has a number of beaches that are just a walk away. While we were there, the weather was still not warm enough for us to consider dipping our toes in the water (read 10 oC ), we noticed that it did not bother many of the other visitors.
In fact, I even noticed a couple of people in shorts with their shirts unbuttoned basking in every little bit of sun they could find. We on the other hand were bundled! Lol!
But if anyone asks me what the top things to do in Ericeira are, I would definitely start with saying, head out to beaches. They are gorgeous even if you don’t plan on getting wet.
2. Surfing Is A Big Thing Here

Did you know that the coast of Ericeira is known for its waves? Yes! While Portugal is known as a surfer’s paradise, Ericeira is one of those locations that people throng too.
No matter what time of the day you head to the beach at (or how cold it is!), you are bound to find people in the water riding the waves. We had fun watching them. It is one of the most popular things to do in Ericeira. The surfing not the watching! I know… Not the best joke.
But it is also a great place to learn to surf. The waves aren’t super high here like you would see in places like Nazare (that’s where the pros head to).
There are loads of great surfing schools that conduct lessons on the beach. You do need to swim well and be confident in the ocean when you start off.
“This was an amazing experience and I highly recommend for any level of surfers. Our guide was so knowledgeable and a great teacher. He also showed us a private beach and one of the best sandwich shops ever. We will definitely book with him again when we come back to Portugal!”

I recommend booking your surfing classes in advance. That way you can read the reviews online and you have everything pre-arranged for you when you reach. Just make sure that you pack plenty of water, sunscreen, a towel and a change of clothes. You’ll need them!
3. Walk Around The City
Walking around this gorgeous city never gets old.
One of the things to do in Ericeira that I really loved was walking around the city. Like most European cities, this one has its own charm. Most building sin the area are painted white. The blue that highlights parts of the structures adds to the visual delight.
As you wander around you are bound to come across the famous Portuguese Azulejos, or the tiles that the country has gained a reputation for. If you have read our article on Boardgames for travelers then you will know that these tiles were the inspiration behind the popular boardgame Azul.
4. Catch A Bite To Eat
The food in Portugal is an absolute delight. Everything that we bit into was bursting with flavour. Now if food is your thing, then you have to visit the bakeries and cafes in the town’s centre. There aren’t a lot of them but the ones that are there are really good. We tried a little of everything.
My favourite was the Pastel de Nata. The creamy custard texture combined with the flaky pastry base was pure heaven! These are delicious all over Portugal but one of the popular things to do in Lisbon is to head to the Belem shop where they were originally made.
We visited the spot three times when we were there. I digress. The point is that you can actually get great pasteis de nata in Ericeira and it pairs extremely well with a cup of hot tea or coffee.
5. Shopping
There are a couple of stores in the main part of the city that sell a lot of trinkets. Beautiful Azulejos, bags, items made of cork are all great souvenirs to take home. While we did not really buy much, we enjoyed browsing through the items on display.
6. Photography
One of the things to do in Ericeira that I personally loved was taking photographs. The iconic city has a lot of spots that can capture your attention. From the old churches, the scenic beaches and the numerous churches, I found it hard to put my camera away. It could also have partly been because I fell in love with my new Fujifilm camera but I firmly believe that was just one part.
7. Wine And Dine On Portuguese Delicacies

I know that I mentioned that there are a number of places to eat at which you should definitely try. There are a number of people like us who would prefer a budget approach to things. Don’t worry, we have your back. Just head into one of the many supermarkets in Ericeira. There is loads to choose from.
The wine racks are well stocked and for as cheap as 2-3 Euros, you can get yourself a bottle of wine to indulge in. Trust me… Portuguese wine is delicious, and we may have overindulged. If you aren’t sure what to buy or if you want to really explore the local Portuguese cuisine, then you can also head out on a food tour.
Here you will discover all about the history of Portuguese cuisine, how it has involved over the years and how the use of different ingredients from its colonies has shaped the way Portuguese food is. I loved this aspect of it since we are from Goa and it was a Portuguese colony.
“Excellent. All our family enjoyed themselves. One of the BEST activities we did on our trîp. Great food. GREAT GUIDE. Excellent way to visit this great part of Portugal.”

The influences of the Portuguese cuisine can be seen there too. For example I’ve often talked about the Goan bread. It is very similar to that in Portugal. Plus we have chouriço or sausages, rissois, pasteis and more!
One of the unique things on a food tour in Ericeira is the ability to taste ouriço which is paired with a strong coffee. You will also be introduced to the best local haunts for food and wine. Sounds like an adventure in itself right?
Another great thing about the tour is that even though it has non-vegetarian options and wine, it can be adapted for vegetarians, vegans and children. You just have to let them know when you book. That’s why it is one of the cool things to do in Ericeira!
As you can see, there are plenty of things to do in Ericeira that will keep you occupied during your vacation. Quiet frankly my absolute favorite activity was to chill and take in the Portuguese vibes.
