8 Extremely Cool Things To Do In Quedlinburg, Germany + Tips On Where To Stay

The city of Quedlinburg is one of the UNESCO heritage sites in Germany. Yes! The whole city! It’s pretty amazing with its palace and abbey on the top of a sandstone cliff. It is here that you get a bird’s eye of the entire city and all the popular things to do in Quedlinburg. I’ll talk about that in a bit though.

Quedlinburg rose to fame pretty recently in the board game groups that I’m part off because there was a super cool board game called Quacks of Quedlinburg that was released. It isn’t one of the travel board games that I’m always talking about because it comes in a huge box. I own a copy but unfortunately it is still on my shelf of shame because I haven’t had a chance to play it yet.

Anyways, this was the game that got me searching for the quaint German town. I was surprised to find that there was a surprising number of things to do in Quedlinburg. Since it was on our route to Prague, I decided to add it as a stop. We were definitely not disappointed. Quedlinburg was super cute and was the perfect location to spend a couple of hours taking in the beauty of Germany.

Getting To Quedlinburg

Quedlinburg isn’t one of the big cities in Germany which means that it does not have its own airport. The closest city with an airport is Leipzig. The best way to get to Quedlinburg is generally by bus, train or by car. We chose to head here by car because it made sense and we were on a road trip where Quedlinburg was just one stop.

Once you get to the city you can easily walk everywhere which is super convenient when it comes to exploring and covering all the things to do in Quedlinburg.

Where To Stay In Quedlinburg

While you can see all the things to do in Quedlinburg in a day, it is also a great place to just chill at. It is a peaceful city with a rather sleepy pace. Perfect for unwinding if you ask me. Here are a couple of places where you can stay while you do just that.

Hotel Domschatz – Budget

Hotel Domschatz is a family run hotel so its pretty cozy. In fact, the building itself is one of the iconic monuments of Quedlinburg. The half timbered structure is over 200 years old and well maintained. An interesting thing about the hotel is that each of the rooms is themed and the furnishings are unique. The rooms itself are spacious and have their own private bathroom.

Every morning there is a hearty breakfast available in the breakfast room.

If you’ve been traveling through Germany you know that a good breakfast means all sorts of bread, cheese, yoghurt and fruits.

“Great friendly people! They really make you feel at home. Such a positive atmosphere. Beautiful surroundings, perfect location and everything was there. Super stay!”

Romantik Hotel am Brühl – Luxury

If you would like to treat yourself to a bit of luxury, consider booking a room at the Romantik Hotel am Brühl. This hotel is also in one of the famous half timbered houses. The staff here are exceptional and very very kind. You will find that they go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable.

One of the things that everyone raves about is the courtyard. Here there’s a fireplace that you can sit next to during the colder days of the year. There’s even a piano. It is the perfect set up if you want to be social and mingle with other people.

“Charming and comfortable, good location within walking distance of old town. Excellent breakfast.”

The hotel is also very central so you don’t have to worry about transport in the city. Super convenient if you ask me! You can also head back to your room if you get tired roaming around and covering all the cool things to do in Quedlinburg. So there’s that too!

Things To Do In Quedlinburg, Germany

I’ll be honest. I visited the city mostly because I’m so obsessed with board games. Turns out there are a lot of things to do in Quedlinburg, Germany. Plus, the city is pretty laid back so its the perfect place if you want a slow paced day. Here are some of the things to do in Quedlinburg that we covered in one day.

1. Stiftskirche St. Servatius

One of the top things to do in Quedlinburg is to visit Stiftskirche St. Servatius.

The first thing that we did as soon as we parked our car was to head to the Stiftskirche St. Servatius. Visiting this church is one of the main things to do in Quedlinburg, Germany.

This 10th century Romanesque church rises above the city and can be seen from far. It is full of sculptures, paintings, relics and manuscripts. This makes it one of the top things to do in Quedlinburg, Germany.

Unfortunately for us, the day that we visited, the church was closed. We still wandered around it and marveled at its beautiful fascade.

One of the interesting things to do when you are here is to wander around because you get to see the Schlossberg defensive wall and the Schlossgarten.

2. Schlossberg Defensive Wall

Walking along the Schlossberg defensive wall is another one of the cool things to do in Quedlinburg, Germany. If you walk from the Stiftskirche St. Servatius to it, you may not even realize that you are one the wall till you reach the edge and look down. We on the other hand used the steps to climb up so we could see just how high and thick the wall was.

One of the best parts about the Schlossberg defensive wall is that it gives you a bird’s eye view of the city. On a clear day, you can just sit here and enjoy the view and peace.

3. Schlossgarten Quedlinburg

One of my favorite things to do in Quedlinburg, Germany is to relax at the Schlossgarten.

The Schlossgarten is a very pretty place too. It has a lot of colorful flowers and if you visit in spring or in summer, you will see it in full bloom. There is a lot of open space too. We let the kids run around here and it was fun.

4. Café & Cheesecake Bakery

If you have a sweet tooth then you have to try one of these cool cheesecakes at Cafe & Cheesecake bakery. It is one of my favorite things to do in Quedlinburg, Germany.

Once you are done with the defensive wall, the church and the garden, start walking towards the city. On the way make sure to stop at Cafe & Cheesecake bakery. Odd suggestion? Definitely not. Germans make some of the best cakes in the world. This particular cafe makes only cheesecake. There are so many different types of cheesecakes here. Plain, with toppings, sweet, mildly sweet, chocolate, nutella and more…

My only problem here? I couldn’t eat more than one slice. Lol. The inside of the cafe is also super cozy. If you catch one of the tables with the window next to it, you can also see the streets outside and the flowers that overflow from the pots. Pretty scenic and one of the experiences that I absolutely loved!

5. Marktplatz

The Markplatz is one of the top things to do in Quedlinburg, Germany

My favorite spot was the Marktplatz. It’s the bustling center of the town which is very different from the rest of the city which is much quieter. It is also the location that is featured on the cover of the game Quacks of Quedlinburg. We obviously had to stop and try to replicate the photograph. It was a lot of fun.

The Marktplatz is the place where you can find stalls set up. Here you can buy the bratwurst and bread which is one of my favorite snacks. The best part is that the bratwurst is barbecued in front of you on coals. You can also buy vegetables, fruits, handicrafts and even flowers.

6. Visit The Half Timbered Houses

The half timbered houses along the cobbled streets are one of the top things to do in Quedlinburg, Germany.

One of the reasons why Quedlinburg is so famous is because it has so many half timbered houses. These buildings are really old. The oldest buildings date back to 1310. So yes! They are almost a 1000 years old! Crazy!

The whole city has numerous half timbered houses. Since it was not affected as much during the second world war, these structures were spared. Only 26 houses needed to be repaired or reconstructed.

There are over 900 of these half timbered houses that are still standing and which are being used. They are obviously designated as protected monuments. You can see why the whole of Quedlinburg has been made a UNESCO Heritage site.

7. Take A Walking Tour Through The City

You can always explore the city by yourself but if you are a bit like me and want to really delve into the city’s past then its a good idea to book one of the walking tours. These tours will take you through all the things to do in Quedlinburg and it always conducted by a local so you get the local perspective of the city.

The tour also gives you insight into the 1,100 odd years of history of Quedlinburg. It takes you through the cobbled streets and the narrow lanes. You get to see the iconic buildings, learn about their significance and visit castle hill.

One thing that you should keep in mind is that the climb up to Castle hill is steep. So be prepared. Wear good walking shoes so it makes the journey easier.

“One of the best city tours I’ve done. An enthusiastic woman from Quedlinburg took us on a tour of the old town, got us carried away and answered questions before we could ask them. Through Ms. H.’s tour, I saw the city again with completely different eyes. Really amazing!”

A cool part of the tour is that you can even bring your dog along. So yes! Furry friends don’t have to be left behind!

8. Historical Old Town Evening Walking Tour

The half timbered houses along the canals are so pretty and you will see them if you take a tour. It is one of the best things to do in Quedlinburg, Germany

Now I know I recommended taking the above walking tour which is cool but if you have already explored the city and want to do something a tad bit different, I would recommend taking the Historic old town evening walking tour. Here you will walk through the town, hear stories about the famous historical figures including the night watchmen, Stiftshauptmann, midwife Mutter Griebsch, and Till Eulenspiegel.

The cool different part about this tour is that your guide will be all decked up in a costume so that he really sets the mood. It is the perfect way to learn about the history. Plus, many of the numerous things to do in Quedlinburg will also be covered in this tour. So you can always catch what you missed when you explored the city on your own.
