I came across the Van Delft Chocolates & Bakery quite by accident. Shawn received a lovely welcome gift from a colleague in office. Among the many local delicacies that were included was a bag of Van Delft truffles.
I honestly did not think much of them till I popped one of them in my mouth. After that, the kids, Shawn and I literally devoured the bag.
Trust me! If you are looking for something unique in the Netherlands, put the Van Delft chocolates on your list!

There are around 20 pop up stores of the Van Delft Chocolates & Bakery around the Netherlands. They however are seasonal and can be found between September and December. Don’t be disappointed if you miss the season because there are four permanent stores in the country.
Ever since 2021, you can visit and buy the Van Delft Chocolates all through the year. You just have to visit one of these permanent fixtures.

Just have to love the different options available at the Van Delft Chocolates & Bakery in Groningen.
We visited the Van Delft Chocolates & Bakery in Groningen. It is an amazing little store which is filled to the brim with goodies. The lady at the store told us that while the store has been open since 2021, the actual business has been in play since 1880.
In fact, the Van Delft Chocolates & Bakery is a family run business and has been part of the family since 1880. That in itself is pretty cool. The pop up stores were very popular across the country. That was the reason why they decided to have a more permanent fixture.
Oh and in case you are wondering, Van Delft has nothing to do with the city Delft! Yes. I had to ask about that too because I was insanely curious.
What Should You Buy At The Van Delft Chocolates & Bakery?
If you can’t choose just go with the assortment of favorites.
Getting into the store is so much like heading into a candy shop. It is so so hard to choose.
The chocolates themselves are very interesting. In case you are confused like I am, these are called pepernoten and no, do not listen to Google translate. This is not peperoni! I had such a good laugh at the literal translation of this word.
Pepernoten has a small baked biscuit or cookie in the center and is surrounded by a variety of flavors. This leaves you with a crunch in every bite! We loved the Van Delft truffles so we knew exactly where to start.
The shopkeeper was also super helpful. She knew exactly what direction to point us in after asking a few questions.
Our choices included a salted caramel (sweet with a salty aftertaste), dark roast (a coffee chocolate flavor which is perfect if you love dark chocolate) and obviously the chocolate truffles. She gave us a bag of orange chocolate ones for free too.
The best (according to me) are the ones surrounded by Belgium chocolate.
In addition to this, we added in a gift box which included four of the most popular flavors as a treat for Shawn to take to the office since it was our daughter’s birthday.
They also have some cookies. These come with different types of icing on top of them. Our daughters loved them when they got them as treats in the store.
Okay so if you ask me, don’t hesitate twice. The Van Delft Chocolates & Bakery is one of the best places that you can visit.
The chocolates and cookies are amazing. They work well as a snack, a tea time treat and are amazing gifts for friends. I cannot emphasize this enough. It is highly recommended!
